DO NOT SUBSTITUTE THEM! They are for different areas of the colon.
Rowasa is a liquid and goes higher up in the colon, more so for left sided flare ups. It passes right by the immediate anal/sigmoid junction where proctitis usually is.
The Canasa is the same medicine yes, however is used for localized proctitis, just inside the anus for the first few centimeters of the sigmoid, since it is a solid and won't travel too far...where the Rowasa usually passes right by. They both serve different
locations. Canasa was a lifesaver for me.
Rowasa will (may) NOT treat the area that Canasa or Anusol HC (hydrocortisone) will....it will pass right by. These two drugs are SPECIFICALLY for proctitis, which is why they were prescribed.
Hope that helps!
