What is the bathroom situation across the world?

I've always been curious, are there lots of restrooms available in France? Germany? Tokyo?

How do other countries fair with the U.S.? I've noticed more and more bathrooms closing down across the U.S. or with signs "out of order" - yeah right!! - or you have to go get a key!!

Are there any countries where it is just a nightmare? I actually believe the U.S. is turning into one, with the exception of Quick Trip.

We have plenty in the uk but like yours some of them esp in rural areas are starting to close due to vandalism , cost of upkeep etc. they're generally clean over although sometimes whiffy but can't expect anything more! Five taken quite a few trips to France and while they have lots of public toilets I can honestly say i would rather pee/poo in a bush! They are absolutely disgusting, many just holes in the ground, others literally caked in faeces! Not a nice experience!

Since you asked for Germany, I'm going to answer.

We do have lots of public restrooms. However, they are mostly in very bad condition. Either they are dirty or people go in and destroy things. They lack soap most of the times and paper.

There is a service which allows you to send in a letter of your GI and you can buy a key which gets you access to all handicapped restrooms in Europe. I paid 15 Euros for mine and I still have it at home. The handicapped restrooms are in better shape and mostly available.

I needed to use one a while back and the cleaning lady was asking me if I had a handicapped pass. Coincidentally, I had one. But it isn't needed for the key if you have IBD. Thankfully I was already done with my business because she kept arguing with me and questioning why I have access. I look like a young healthy woman. She was expecting someone which crutches and a wheelchair lol

I remember being surprised at having to pay to use the public toilets in London, England. And in Thailand, you pay for toilet paper and hand wipes. The toilets in Thailand are mostly holes in the ground. One place I remember was just a tiled trench along two sides of a wall, with water running through it to carry everything away. No privacy, everyone just out in the open. In Canada there are plenty of washrooms, and they are usually clean, but it all depends on who does the upkeep!

I'm in Canada. We seem to have a decent amount of washrooms, usually pretty clean. I was in Ireland and encountered a few pay washrooms, fussing with change to insert in to the door so it would open was not fun! Also, in Mexico- they had a lady who was in the bathroom all day...she handed you toilet paper as you went in to the stall...then lingered there waiting for you to finish and shed hand you a paper towel. THAT was horrible.

Well, free public bathrooms in most countries are disgusting... In Germany I noticed quite a few for pay bathrooms and the result is that attendants keep them in great shape, always clean. Worth it in my book. Japan is famous for fancy luxury toilets, but I have yet to visit there- I did get the pleasure of an emergency dump in a chinese squat (pit) toilet. By the way, who are the pondscum who pee into toilets without even raising the seat and splash all over the seat? One if my pet peevs. I assume ladies dint have to out uo with that much but since a lot of you are "hoverers" (so my wife tells me), maybe that happens in the ladies room too.

I think I'll avoid Thailand and Mexico for now. That is the stuff of nightmares!!
