So my colonoscopy showed severe inflammation in the rectal area... well, today I started my first day of prednisone. Everything was going well, only 2 BM's all day with a little blood.
Then before bed I took my mesalamine enema... omg did it ever hurt going in. I held it in for 45 minutes, that's all I could do even though I used to be able to hold it in nightly (over the last week I can't seem to be able to hold them in nightly anymore, had to get up at about
1am, which is about
2 hours later. They helped a lot at first, but two weeks ago my flare became significantly worse). And omg, it was so painful to release and now my anus feels in so, so, so much pain. There was also a lot of blood. After I went to release the enema the first time (where I released some blood too), I had to quickly run again to the washroom a second time with extreme urgency and all I let out was some more blood.
I think I'm going to lay off the enemas until my flare is more under control. Owwwww, I totally regret doing it now, I was doing so well all day =(

Oh no! Sorry to hear about
the issue with the enema :(
that really sucks. Hopefully the prednisone will help clear things up quick!
I like to call the second run to the bathroom within minutes (or seconds!) Of being in there... the dreaded "double poop"
Its like... wow... why did I waste that soap and water... just to run back a second later! Ive even had a triple before... not cool butt!

Retaining enemas can be very difficult. Did you get the air out of the bottle before inserting? Sometimes air can make it harder to retain. I usually try to use cortifoam or a suppository if I can't retain Rowasa. Those are smaller and easier to retain. Do you have anything else you can use?

Okay, so I got up twice during the night and omg so much blood. I felt so exhausted and thirsty by the time I woke up.
I have nothing else at the moment, but I'm supposed to make an appointment see my GI by Friday so I'll ask her about
cortifoam or a suppository. I really like her, she was so caring before my colonoscopy and asked a lot of questions and wrote down everything I said.

I second notsosicklygirl's response. The air always killed me when I was making my own enemas! I'm sorry you're going through so much pain. :( When I'm flaring, I always wake up every hour to go "poo" but once it starts to heal, you'll start to sleep longer.

How do you get the air out before inserting? I'm always worried that if I press it before the enema will come out!! I never tried that before.

I'm not sure how those look but you would have to squeeze it slowly enough so that the air comes out. You would do this as much as you can, either have the enema reach the tippy top or just enough, whichever is comfortable and then you would insert from there.
I was so tired of air getting trapped that I got a syringe type enema. :|

I squeeze it and you can clearly hear air come out. Then I will let a couple drops come out, at that point, I know there is only minimal air left in the bottle and I use it. I also don't go crazy forcing it all in. I use what I am comfortable with. Usually if I can't retain it, it doesn't matter how much I use or don't use, it's coming out within an hour, or less.

Okay, sounds good! I still think I'm going to wait about
a week or so for the bleeding to decrease though. =) Thanks for your guy's help!!

severe rectal inflammation and enemas is catch 22. you need them most, but can tolerate/hold them least
the sulfate buffer can irritate, and sulfate-free form may be better - but expensive
also, perhaps apply nupercainal to make administrating and voiding less painful

I was using bentyl before enemas to try to make it easier to retain but I still didn't have any luck :(
Maybe it would work for you...
