I hate all UC symptoms, but this one is certainly among the worst. It's most aggravating when I get into bed, making it difficult to fall asleep.
I used mesalamine suppositories for just about a month, with pretty good results. But just five days after stopping them, tenesmus returns. I know, I need to continue them, perhaps every other night. My supply ran out and I have no refills. Was hoping to hold out until my GI appt in just over a week, but alas . . .
So I have two questions. First, most people describe tenesmus symptoms as having the urge to go, but being unable to once they're on the pot. Mine is slightly different in that I have the rectal pressure or sensation, but I know I don't need to go. Having gas exacerbates the sensation, so passing gas feels great! Does that jive with other peoples' experience?
Second, which steroid suppository works best or is most commonly prescribed? I have some Hydrocortisone Acetate Supp 25mg leftover from a hemorrhoid prescription; is that the same suppository that is prescribed for UC?
My thought is that I will work with the steroid initially and then continue, perhaps indefinitely, the mesalamine. My Dr. didn't think the mesalamine supp is a long-term treatment, but what I've learned here clearly shows the error of his thinking.
