Crohn's/UC and unsure

My 16 year old son has been doing well with his Crohn's/UC, but this morning had suddenly lots of blood while passing stool. While worried, he seemed otherwise fine, until he started shivering, and shaking. His head is hot with fever, and he's freezing cold.
What should I do? Could it be coincidentally a flu, and sudden unexplainable bleeding? His next bathroom trip showed no signs of blood whatsoever. We could go to the hospital, but he's afraid of another colonoscopy.
Advice please.

That seems scary! He could have an infection going on, or a flu bug that is causing a flare. I would at least call his doc if you know the doc will get back to you very soon, like today.

Another thought, he is 16, so I assume he tells you if there is blood. If you don't see for yourself, could he tell you no blood is there because he doesn't want to go to the doc? I'm in no way blaming your son in any way. I'm saying he might do that because he is scared.

The only thing I'm going to say is that you shouldn't let the fear of a colonoscopy cloud your judgment on what you think the right thing to do is.

Right now, he's lying down with blankets, and has a very hot fever. He did throw up. He's got cold water and Tylenol by his side.
I'm going to call the doctor.

I think you're doing the right thing by calling the Dr. I would in your situation with his symptoms of sudden loss of blood and high temperature.

I waited three days to see a Dr when a flare up suddenly became severe (at the same time I got a chest virus) with lots of bms and vomiting, thinking it was 'just' a winter vomiting bug (norovirus). It wasn't and I ended up in hospital.

That does sound scary! Best to let the doc know whats going on, at least then, even if he says monitor at home, he has the heads up if it does go worse or something.

Honestly I'd take him to the ER, it sounds like something is seriously wrong to me based on the info you've provided.

Since it seems as though he has Crohns-Colitis I'd go down to the ER as well as soon as you can. When I first became ill I was somewhat ok for a while like the way he sounded previously - but then one day I awoke and had the same symptoms - fever, chills, increased blood in stool and my ankles swelled.

I dragged myself to the hospital and was admitted and the problem was dealt with via antibiotic IV and Pred IV.

Is he in a lot of pain when he goes to the bathroom as well? Maybe ask him that - again if he is, just another reason to go to the ER. With my Crohns-Colitis when in full on flare it can be unbearable going to the washroom.

Also I should add that for me blood was not with every bowel movement - sometimes there would be some, sometimes minor, sometimes none. As was mentioned above, perhaps at 16 he's a little reluctant to go into details with you - I was with my parents.

Hopefully it's just a flu bug or something - but why not play it safe - I'd still ask him how painful it is when he has a bowel movement - Like say on a 1-10 scale. If it's above a 5 head on down. At my worst I was about a 15 on that scale, haha. It's not a nice feeling in any way.

I'm leaning more toward a flu bug of some kind. He goes to school where these things just run rampant. My daughter just the other day had diarrhea and vomited but luckily no fever. I hope it passes quickly. Keep the tylenol on board and keep him hydrated. I try not to panic every time I get sick...people get viruses, we just happen to have UC and think the worst immediately.

Of course if it lingers longer than a day or two then you may need to head to the doctors.
