I'm newly diagnosed, I started out with multiple trips to the bathroom and all the other fun stuff. My doctoer increased my meds yesterday to 3 pills, 2 times a day, so doubled. First dose I took was last night and this morning I have went about 5 times in 2 hours and the last time it was pretty much just blood....do I need to be worried? Is this normal? It's kinda scary....I had a lot of personal stress yesterday...not sure if this plays a part in it or not?

I would call your DR and discuss. Some people are intolerant of mesalamines and that might include you.

It's like a cut to your forehead...a little blood, especially in the water, looks like a ton. There's also hemorrhoids, etc. to take into account....it's an up and down process, so don't worry.

Don't jump right into the bad things or intolerance right away.

Might be the meds or it might be the stress. I would think if you are continuing to go more times than you were before increasing the meds and seeing blood where you weren't before then its the meds. I would give it another day or two and see how you are.

never rule out proctitis as well, which means you may need suppositories....enemas won't help that, since they go right by the affected area right at the very end.

Definitely monitor your symptoms and see how you do for the next few days. It is normal to have bad days. Watch for a tend over time.

I would however only give it a few days if you are feeling it started with an increase in medicine. Did you notice any increase in symptoms when you first started this medication?

Hi Cheryl, I've been using enemas to treat my proctitis and they've worked well. I think they're quite a common treatment and can work just as well if not better than suppositories. The only reason I mention it is that you're already so stressed out that I don't want you thinking that you're on the wrong medication. They may not work for you but rest assured enemas are a standard and often used treatment for proctitis.
