I use a step stool when I go to the toilet too - it's a more natural position and I find it more comfortable. I know what you mean about
hugging knees to the abdomen helping - although it doesn't stop me from going a few times in succession during a flare.
There are also yoga moves for trapped wind that involve hugging one or both knees(maybe not during a flare up!):
