Prednisone and Heart Palpitations

Hello Everyone,


I am 19 and have UC for about 5 months now. I am currently on 40mg of Prednisone and I also take 4 pills of Apriso. Since I've started the prednisone I can now feel and hear my heart beat inside my chest even when just lying down. I get really tired and my heart starts pumping fast even when just walking medium distances at a fair rate. Have any of you had this problem? I literally have to stop and catch my breath every time I walk somewhere. Oh, and I get this really bad siliva in my mouth right before I have to use the restroom has anyone else experienced that? It tastes bad and it's always a lot.

Yes the heart palpitations is the pred. I don't remember getting out of breath but its been a few years since I have been on it.

Yep. I have experienced the exact same thing recently while on pred. I know everyone is different by my guess is that the palpitations will subside when you are on a lower dose. Anything over 20mgs gives me crazy side effects. I've gotten out of breath too, but that was more associated with weakness from not being able to eat alot and feeling shaky from the pred.

As for the excessive saliva in your mouth, that sounds like what happens to me when I am getting ready to vomit. Do you feel nauseated with your bowel movements? When I am flaring it is not uncommon for me to have to vomit while I'm going to the bathroom. (Fun, I know.) Maybe your body is having a reaction to the bowel movement and not necessarily the prednisone. I could be wrong, but it's just a thought.

I'm sorry you're having a tough time. Try to hang in there! It's tough to navigate this illness and then the side effects from the meds that are supposed to help us!
