In hospital & what an ASS this dr is!!

So in emerg. Only treatment is fluids & gravol. Nothing to help the d. I told dr that seemed a bit unorthodox given that I'm still going 30 times a day. His response?? "We only worry if you stop going!" I politely yet candidly disagreed with him.

I'd almost, almost relish the thought of him having the runs for 24 hrs!

Ticks me off that he dismissed my symptoms & suffering!

Holy frustrating... some of the things that these emergency docs come out with. I guess in some ways to them having "D" 30 times a day isn't a full on you're going to die in the next few hours type emergency, so perhaps they just respond like that and push it off to the Emergency on Call GI for when he has time, but I swear they do not understand the effect and sometimes pain and discomfort crapping 30 times a day can have on a person.

I don't know. Sometimes I think in order to understand the disease (or the effects on us) - even for a GI - they actually need to endure or have the disease themselves otherwise it's like talking to a brick wall.

If it's any comfort I went through a very similar experience - in fact they called a Psychiatrist in to see me as they thought I was having "mental issues" and this was manifesting in "D", blood and mucus 30+ times a day. I was just speechless... anyway after the Psych guy gave up and left the nurse came back into the room and said to me her daughter had Crohn's and she understood how I felt. She went and found the GI on call and and I was soon re-admitted and dealt with.

Luck of the draw perhaps as to what doc you get... who knows.

Frustrating as heck though! Sorry to hear about your experience.

PS - There's a lot of doctors that I totally wish I could snap my fingers and make them have a full on flaring IBD state for say a week... It would totally change how they respond to/treat these things.

Yes, I think a vast majority of doctor's are indeed ***holes and refuse to think outside the box, much less try to understand our suffering. I guess somewhere along the way, they get so desensitized that they begin to lose brain function or mass. If a patient complains about anything, it's labeled a mental issue and this gives them the license to prescribe psychotropic drugs or sleeping pills, as if that will fix the issue. This is a total and blatant violation of the hippocratic oath that they swore to uphold before practicing.

Everything comes at a price however. I believe they have a lower life expectancy and higher suicide rates compared to the average population. They are more likely to abuse drugs and drink as well.

Personally, I would only go to the emergency room to die. I've had many instances where I did need to go, but refused. I guess I should thank coconut water and dextrose powder for some of the hydration I needed. I should really invest in some solumedrol drips as well.

Even if the cares in ER are not always the best (or not very human) for bad UC flare, it should not prevent anyone from going and get the emergency treatments such as IV fluid.

Some Dr. may seems very insensitive and they are but then again we don't know what other people they saw before us on that same day. Some not really sick complaining for nothing or going there when they could have easily waited for an appointment with their family Dr. and on the same day they may have seen a child dying.

Therefore they are not very caring with the others... I'm not saying it ok for them to be like that. But it should not prevent us from going to the ER when we need it.

ER docs aren't supposed to have an in-depth understanding of UC or any other chronic disease. They're not there to treat chronic diseases, only to provide emergency care to keep people alive until their regular doctors can take over. I know there are a few places in the US where the ER is the only choice for medical care, but not many. You're far better off to go to your GI or even your PCP than to the ER. Even though it feels like a life-threatening emergency to us, diarrhea without dehydration isn't life-threatening in the short term, and diarrhea only causes dehydration in a matter of hours in young children.

Hopefully if more of us have insurance, we can get more appropriate medical care when we're acutely ill.

Amazing how crappy you get treated in an ER even if you ignore that it is the profit center of most hospitals these days

You are right. There's no dignity in dying @ the hospital. After watching a loved one die in hospice care a few months back, I realized how much of a freak show it is. The worst was people taking pictures, like it was some kind of circus.

Give me good ol' phenobarbital any day for a peaceful and painless death.

That's something we can definitely agree on. We give our pets more dignity than we give ourselves.

Really sorry for the tangent. I see you started another thread, and I hope some of us can offer our words of wisdom there.
