Some people don't have elevated markers in blood tests when they're sick, but many do, and this can be a useful tool for you and your DR to evaluate whether you are in remission.

I rarely ever have elevated markers but I think it's standard to check, especially if someone is experiencing flare symptoms. I get some markers checked with my regular blood work for 6mp.

ESR doesn't elevate when I have inflammation. CRP does. It's worth having them done when you know you have inflammation to see which if any are elevated to give you a reference point for future.

In the first few years of my uc the markers would rise giving the drs a good indication that I was in a flare. But as the years go on I am noticing that my crp levels don't rise and I can be in a really bad flare.. I am in my 14 th year of uc.
Last time my levels were normal I had a colonoscopy and when I came out I was on the verge of toxic megacolon the drs couldn't believe how sick I was and none of the blood test where showing it.
I think the blood test are worth it but they may not always show what's going on :)

I am told if you are on imuran for long periods of time it can supress your system so it may not show things up.. I have been on imuran for 14 years now so that maybe why my crp doesn't rise when I'm in a flare anymore. That's just me guessing though..

My blood work showed no inflammation, my colon on the other hand...loads of inflammation. The GI who did my first scope said its common for blood work to come back normal when the disease is in the early stages. Maybe it doesn't go systemic until its been festering awhile? *shrugs*

It's always reassuring to see that other people don't have traditional markers of inflammation (ie, via bloodwork). I do get mine checked fairly regularly though. Every time my GI checks my insides though, I feel like she's finding a new spot of inflammation, which always makes me wonder why my blood is saying everything is fine... I also never get fevers anymore.

So far, my platelets seem to be the only thing that remain elevated. My CRP and WBCs were up when I lost motility for a while. That's when I was initially diagnosed. Since then they've been in good shape.
