I wouldn't worry about an enema if the surgeon didn't order it -- surgical outcomes are pretty much the same whether you prep or not, it has more to do with surgeon's preference than with being 'clean' for the operation. There are lots on the Ostomies board whose only prep instructions were to fast after midnight.

pluot, i noticed that! i met with two surgeons and they don't use any colon preps. it's just a "no food or drink fast" the day before.

In typical fashion, my preps are doing NOTHING. I downed the bottles of mag citrate- 1 at 9:30am, 1 around 2:00pm.... and here I am, still not going at all! Not at all.... Just like old-times sake! I told the surgeon that I have a lot of problems with preps, because of the stricture- things just don't move! If I get there tomorrow AM & he says he's not doing it...I will scream. And thank you all, for the kind words & well-wishes! I haven't made this decision alone, pretty much all of you have helped in some way. Hopefully I will be reading the boards from the bathroom, soon...!!!! With my luck it'll start working at 4:00am, & I'll crap my pants the entire way to the hospital.

I wish you all possible luck Eva!!! I'm sure it's the right decision you have taken, you will recover soon and you'll have a happy new life off the meds and off these horrible problems you've been experiencing so far. I keep my fingers crossed!

Best of wishes to you, sounds like you are on top of it. You have to decided what is best for you, and you have done that!

Haha - For colonoscopy last year I rode my bicycle back from dropping truck off for repair after consuming that junk, there was home construction and porta potties along my route.....only I never made it out of the parking lot when IT HIT. Luckily it was so early nobody was there.

Wow, it's really happening! I didn't realize it was today already! I am wishing you the best of luck; I hope it all goes well and you have a fast and complete recovery. Can't wait to hear from you again and hear how it went.

Eva,

I just had time to read your initial post on here. I hope you made it through everything and are stable.

Just in case you get feeling like "what did I do?!"... I just want to give my support. I have not had surgery. I am in complete remission besides some goofy IBS issues. Still, I contemplate surgery often. This morning I had a dream I was in a therapy session talking to my therapist about wanting to get surgery due to the side effects of Remicade becoming unbearable. Apparently it's on my mind at some level.

Who knows what the future of research into UC and Chron's may find, but every single day you are able to mentally and physically be relieved of the pains and disabilities of UC is going to go strongly into that positive column... and one day you're going to realize that you were able to live a lot more of your life for having had this surgery.

I still haven't been this forum much to update about my wedding, but I poke on from time to time for a minute... and tonight I wanted to send you my support.

I bet you'll have struggles and second thoughts all along the way to being healed... but you were very courageous and kind to yourself to make this decision.

       I've been thinking about and praying for you.  I would imagine you are still in the hospital recovering.  I've walked in your shoes, so I know the anxiety you've been through.  Keep us posted...we love you!  Christine

     Forgot to mention in the last post....my surgeon didn't require me to take a prep...but, then most of the people on the ostomate board know my surgeon didn't do things the way most surgeons do.  He didn't sew my anus closed...and I still stres over that fact, even four years later.  All he required me to do was drink clear fluids 24 hrs prior to the surgery.  For good measure, I drank clear fluids 48 hrs before surgery and PRAYED TO GOD...Dr. Fry knew what he was doing.  Well, I'm still alive and 67 yrs old...so guess he did smilewinkgrin .
