about
25% of people with IBD have joint pain associated with their disease. Most GIs and rheumatologists agree that treating the bowel disease should relieve the joint pain, so the ultimate goal is to achieve a truly solid remission.
My rheumy pushed my GI to treat my gut inflammation more aggressively. My GI's recommendation was to switch my meds around a bit and add sulfazine, which is a med that apparently relieves joint pain while it also treats bowel inflammation. I've had good luck with it.
I also found that adopting a gluten free diet got rid of the very last bits of joint pain in my life. Aside from a couple of 1-day flares associated with viral illnesses, I have been free of all joint pain for 3 years, free of serious joint pain since 2008 or so. Joint pain was my primary issue for many years, above and beyond all the bowel symptoms for me.
So, first get a rheumy if you haven't already so you can eliminate other things. Second, talk to your GI about sulfazine. Last - consider a GF diet.
