When I had an ostomy I wore high waisted underwear that covered my pouch. If my shirt rode up, someone would only see the underwear (which looked like I was wearing a camisole).

Chris: the three things i would recommend are the Low Fodmaps diet, metamucil, and probiotics.
Hope you do well in your finals.
But tbh the whole farting while pooing, and not being able to pass gas are a bit of a put-off when it comes to the jpouch.

Kirk 311, thanks for the inspiring words. I have faith that someone will love me despite my minor issue. Which, honestly Nice Cup of Tea, is minor compared to a lot of people on this site. Am I going to sit her and lie and say I don't get sad thinking about how nice it was to go to the bathroom normally and have a large intestine. Your darn right I do, especially after learning about the digestive system in anatomy and physiology. I'm not going to let it hold me back though.

See, I look at it this way, when something bad happens to me, I get worried or extreme anxiety I think to myself well i've definitely been through a lot worse. My previous challenge with UC has led me to overcome and get passed a lot of the little stuff in life. I try to look at it as optimistically as possible. I know I am a better person for having undergone it. Do I wish it never happened? You better believe it, especially when I had fire poop from eating hot salsa last night. It is the past now, so why don't you not dwell on what you can't change and focus on the future? Crohns and Colitis are very different though, so your experience could be much worse. I hope things get a lot better.

@Chris - Thanks for your words.

I'm not sure if my experience was worse than yours, but it was probably longer, given I was diagnosed in 2000. And, of course, Crohn's can - just like the prodigal son - return. Psychologically, it's a downer: every time I get an abdominal ache, I wonder if it's Crohn's. On the plus side I can eat hot food without having to worry about the ring of fire.

In general I don't know if I am swimming or sinking. I neglected my life for many years due to illness and depression and now it feels like every single chicken in the entire world is coming home to roost. I think in a way having an ileostomy was so hideous and so awful, it has given me more strength to face up to the hideous and awful thing that is my life. But it isn't easy. I'd still far, far rather have not gone through any of it: the years of Crohn's, the operation, the withdrawal off some seriously toxic meds, etc. But, well, I did and I'm here now. Still alive and whingin'.

@Pluot - Don't get me wrong. I can hide the bag when it's necessary to hide it. But I'd hate to have to do it 24/7. The high-waisted knickers don't appeal. It's not like I wear thongs, but I don't want to go to the other extreme either...
