HI everyone,
I'm new to the site and I need some advice. I've had UC for 4 years and I'm currently taking 4 Lialda once a day and 1 shot of Humira every other week. I've gone back and forth with different medications and it seems like they all semi-work, but nothing seems to do the trick and put me in remission. When I first started Humira a year ago, for about
4-5 months I did extremely well--went to the BR 2 times a day, no D, and felt great. Then it slowly stopped working so well. Since I've been on it, I have not gotten so bad that I was flaring (no blood), but it's enough to be inconvenient and embarrassing and depressing and frustrating. I have been reading a lot online and I've seen a lot about
people with UC trying the paleo diet and having relief from their symptoms, and even going into remission by eating according to the paleo diet. I figured I'd give it a try because eating healthier is something we all should do anyway, right? :) So I started it this past Saturday. Today is day 6 and so far I'm still having some D, but all the gas and bloating and urgency is gone. I haven't really had any cramping either. The problem is that I'm having trouble eating and staying full. I feel like I eat all day long just to avoid feeling like i'm going to pass out. I have yet to eat a meal and feel full for more than 20 minutes, then i'm starving again. I know it's better to eat multiple small meals a day rather than 3 large meals, but I work 40-50 hours a week and it's so hard for me to eat all day long at work. I've been eating meat (trying to get organic when I can), veggies and fruits. I would die without any carbs so I'm eating some potatoes with every meal pretty much. My dad is a dietitian and has been for over 20 years so I've gotten some advice from him on how to continue getting all the necessary nutrients, but I guess I just need some suggestions/advice from people who are actually doing the same thing. I'm planning to find a paleo cookbook this weekend which I'm sure will help. Has anyone with UC tried this diet and had success??? Advice please! :)
Thanks!!
Candice

Here are some very recent discussions about
modified paleo diets that have been helpful for others here:

They paleo diet seems good when you first hear about
it but it has some serious problems especially in practice. Evolution doesn't stop and in the case of adaptation to food that can be a few thousand years. People the world over are not the same. Your ancestory makes a difference. Just because your ancestors adapted to a food, it doesn't mean it is good for you.It just means they survived well enough to raise and reproduce offspring better than the other guy. Restrictive diets like all diets tend to become a rut where you eat the same thing. Replacing burger and fries with a huge chunk of lean meat is not going to work out. Cavemen ate much more baby birds, insects and other creepy crawlers than they did deer steak. The eye balls were a delicacy(fat). They were starving all the time.
A better idea is avoid foods that are unhealthy and very recent or altered. Eat the grass fed beef and stay away from Cheetos and pepsi. Reduce food consumption, exercise etc. Watch out for additives, pesticides, herbcides. Avoid dairy until you know it is ok for you. Eat a diverse diet. I believe you can harm yourself eating mostly protein just like you can overdoing fats and carbs.

I tend to agree with AZYooper, but you have to do what you feel is right for you, that said, if your hungry all the time, maybe its not the right diet for you.

The thing is there is absolutely no such thing as a UC diet. Some get better by going Vegan, some get better by going Paleo, some don't get better with any diet, some get better with one of the other hundred diet plans. You can't count on any one particular one helping or any of them helping. It is very individual.
