My "beloved" mesalamine enemas seem to have failed me

No sulfites in the hydrocort -- that's partly why I wanted to give it a trial. It doesn't answer the question of potentially being sensitive to mesalamine, but it does tell me that it's not just because of the extra liquid (which I was fairly certain of anyway).

I had another BM just now, still fairly formed. Somewhat unusual to have a BM this time of day, but I had Japansese food for lunch, and most of the time, Asian food, even if it's supposedly MSG-free, causes me some tummy upset. Probably not the smartest thing to do today, but I was craving it like crazy!

Nope, Old Hat, Sherry recently switched to Apriso. I think it was because she was having some minor problems still, so her GI suggested she switch from Colazal to Apriso.

If the sfRowasa give me the same symptoms as the regular ones do, therefore indicating I've developed a sensitivity to mesalamine, I'll ask my GI about Colazal. I'd rather give it a shot than switching to 6MP or Imuran.

ETA that I used another hydrocort enema last night and poop was near (my) "perfect" this morning. Just called the GI and left a message with the receptionist requesting the sfRowasa.

Another ETA that my GI Rx'ed the sfRowasa, no problems. My pharmacy doesn't have it in stock, but said it should be here by Monday.

Pretty sure it's just 4g.

I hope the sfRowasa solves your problem. Colazal might not "do it" for you if you have right-side inflammation. UCers have so many variants on problems. I've been clobbered by both steroid & mesalamine retention enema harm after yrs of using both kinds successfully against flares. It IS possible to maintain remission on oral mesalamine alone-- so hopefully that will work for you. Sounds like the rectal meds are interfering with absorption of fluid by your mucosa, whereas the steroid jobs improved it. Go easy on fruit, especially with seeds, for a while; that might also help to firm bms. / Old Hat (33 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

quincy, yeah, I'm really glad I tried the Canasa before (almost literally) flushing $50 down the toilet. Yesterday and today I've been fine. Two BMs yesterday; the after dinner one was on the fluffy side, but I imagine the (large amount of) strawberries I ate on Sunday contributed to that, as did lingering irritation from the Canasa. One BM so far today, form is almost back to normal. But I also ate a lot of strawberries last night. Local ones are ripe now, and I have zero self control. At least I got a lot (35 or so pints) of jam made over the weekend so we'll enjoy them all year long!

Quincy, just curious...would you recommend fruitgirl use steroid rectal to some extent as maintenance if def. mesalamine rectal intolerant? I think that is what you are saying...or is it only to end this flair?

Fruitgirl...you might be able to use the mesalamine in remission as maintenance....??
If you are sensitive to mesalamine, you might be sensitive to salicylates in general. I'd suggest (out of curiosity since you are a researcher) as to what and how much of foods you DO eat contain salicylates.

No, I wasn't suggesting a steroid every second night while in remission, for I don't know you are in remission at this point. I'd also suggest you not only use Apriso only while in remission....

You could use a rectal steroid once a week in suppository form....that shouldn't cause you any problems as would a higher steroid dosage.

There are also butyrate enemas?....and maybe the new one that someone was just prescribed (can't remember who or what exactly the enema is).

When you see your doc in July, I suggest he for sure take a look-see with a rectoscope. If all is good there, then the meds you've used have done the job.

It's interesting how a suppository would cause you diarrhea, but how would a glycerine suppository cause one to poo?

I'm happy you're not worse than you were, so something's worked.

It's a frustrating process when all has been good for such a long while and then whammo.
