@Mike, I absolutely agree.

Another thing which could be very interesting for you is research from Prof. Stremmel in Heidelberg. I met him once personally and did not agree to his diagnostics and skills, however, he invented Phosphatidylcholin (Lecithin) which helped a lot of patients I know. Many came into remission without any adverse events and were brutal cases with colon removal in sight.

There is currently a Phase III study (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02280629?term=lecithin&rank=13) on its way and looks very promising. Lecitin strenghtens the mucosa barrier ;-) I know several pharmacies in Germany which already produce Lecitihin granulas. If anyone is interested I can also share some more information about it. As always, very expensive because it is not covered by healthcare insurances in Germany yet.

PS: As far as I remember the University Hospital Pharmacy in Heidelberg does share the ingredients for lecithin suppository with any pharmacy.

GermanOne - i'm very much interested in everything you say here because it's easy for me to travel to Germany (i live in Poland) and i speak German. The only thing i don't quite follow is how this lecithin you're talking about relates to the dietary supplements of lecithin that are available in every pharmacy? The only thing that could strengthen mucosa barrier in my case is debutir. Do you think that this lecithin could be more effective than sodium butyrate? There's a Polish uc forum which is called j-elita so i think you could also post something there.

German: We know about the PC, a few tried it about 4 years ago, no effect.
Was purchased from Germany.
The secret is the enteric coating where the PC is released into the terminal ileum or proximal colon.
None enteric coated PC when ingested will not work at all since it is digested,it is possible the coating was not correct.
Whether PC works on anyone over here remains to be seen.

PS: Might start a thread on why there is no cure,hate for this info to get lost in the biofilm thread.

Perhaps many peoples eyes glaze over with these studies. Might try and make it as simple as possible,

Yeh, you should give PC another try :-) Mike explained how it works, why it needs to be coated and why it is not comparable to PC in Bananas ;-)

We have a lot of people who improved from PC. Some take very high doses - about 20mg per day, it takes about 3 months to see any effects and works only for UC patients. One of the most experienced pharmacy in Germany is Apotheke am Turm (http://www.apoturm.de/impress.shtml). They have one employer promoting on this topic and evaluating questionnaires of patients using retarded PC.

@Mike, go for it. I always loved your articles and read for years.

German: I have taken non enteric coated PC in the past,no effect.
SInce you have brought it up again, I have to wonder, like anything else if you eat too much of it, there
is a possibility that it might escape digestion in the small intestine. I suspect there is only so much
phospholipase to go around.

Its mechanism of action is sitting on top of the outer mucus and increasing its hydrophobic function, which helps to exclude bacteria. So I speculate that if it really does work,then a possibility is that if no new bacteria can get to the biofilms, then possibly if left alone the immune system can remove the biofilm,or even possible exclusion of some nutrient from the lumen into the biofilm is eliminated, or it has some biofilm dissolving effect.

By the way I also did PC enema, found it to be irritating.

@ GermanOne - I saw the things you posted in German (I speak German) and to be honest, it all doesn't sound very serious. I guess you're a representative of a German pharmacy. I'm wondering what the difference between the lecithin you're talking about and the dietary supplement of lecithin which overflows the shelves of all the pharmacies is? Why is lecithin suddenly a cure for UC which undergoes clinical trials in Germany?

There are several studies indicating Lecithin is working properly. One study has mixed results, however, I personally know several people who had tremendous success. You do not even need to order it from any pharmacy. I just mentioned it, because I know that they are the best in Germany (in our UC/MC community) Go for PC 98% and produce e.g. suppository for yourself. It is a bit tricky but cheaper :)

@Old Mike, forget PC without an non enteric coated PC. It will be digested. It has to be coated. Basically studies from Heidelberg showed that especially UC Patients had 70% less PC in their mucosa compared to healthy prospects. As a result they tried to substitution it by enteric coated PC granulate.

Prof. Stremmel got a patent on this (btw, already in 2008) and as a result no one can produce it industrial. Check it: http://www.google.com/patents/EP2185158B1?cl=en&hl=de - however, as there were severe cases the pharmacy in Heidelberg still offers suppositories and he is not sueing pharmacies producing granulate. You just have to Google to verify it :)

I'm not attacking German, i was just wondering if this is the same lecithin, because i've once read the warning on lecithin supplements that it may cause severe kidney damage.

There you can buy granula or tabletts with lecithin which is very close/simliar to lecithin used in the clinical trials. I do not know if they deliver to the Staates and you should check this before you order :)
