Starting 6MP. Possible side effects and lab tests

We are starting 6MP for my daughter. I would like to know if any lab and blood tests have to be done to monitor once you are on 6MP to see if it is becoming toxic.


What is the difference between 6MP and azathioprine? Are they both same drug? Which one is safer? Can these be taken along with Lialda?

yes. didn't the doctors tell you she needs labwork? if not, then i'd run! it has to be monitered weekly for a couple of weeks and then you go every couple of months.

I get regular hepatic panels and CBCs. There is also a test called 6tgp that can show whether you're in the therapeutic range vs toxicity. The doctor should ahve told you all of this. What dose are you starting and when?

Yes, as said below, you need bloods tests carried out - liver function, pancreas (amylase), and blood counts.
These need to be done very regularly at the beginning especially, until you are on the full dose. I developed pancreatitis within 10 days from taking 25mg of 6MP (not very common but it happens!) and luckily it was caught quickly with blood tests, and didn't linger too long once I stopped the meds.

The doctor did mention some tests that needs to be done every week but did not say what those are. She came as low metobolizer for TPMT activity and the doctor said she can be given only low dose. I will come to know the dosage tomorrow after her colonoscopy is completed.
