so i was on vacation this past week and had a great time. first vacation since 2009 because of my long flare. well, a few days ago at the pool, i was laying on a lounge chair for about
3 hours or so. i switched positions a few times and when i stood up, my left thigh from my hip to knee was numb. it was that feeling when your foot falls asleep but after you shake it or walk, it goes away. well, it has been CONSTANT since thursday, 7/17 at around 1 pm. it is like a numb, tingling pain and it hurts when lightly touched. i can't wear pants because of it.
i googled for about
5 seconds "outer thigh numbness" and the first thing to come up was meralgia paresthetica. it's a compressed lateral femoral cutaneous nerve in the groin area under the inguinal ligament. it causes the exact problem i'm having. i figured it could've been from sitting in that horrendous lounge chair because it was not comfortable.
anyway, i also have a big bruise on my lower back. i didn't hit anything but i think it's from that stupid chair.
so i went to the doctor (PCP) today because i assumed it would be gone by now and it's not. he said he is pretty sure it's shingles and gave me a prescript
ion for valtrex. he said it can start anywhere from the spine and branches out into a nerve and causes burning, tingling pain.
i am so annoyed and confused. just not sure what to do. i feel it ALL THE TIME and i need to wear pants but the sensation of fabric on my skin makes it burn. i just started a new job and i go back monday and i can't go pantsless.
can any of you genius people help me. should i see a neurologist?? it's hard since i just got a new job and i don't wanna take time off and look like i can't hold a job- as usual. but at the same time, i cannot live with this numbing, burning pain. it's hard to drive and even brush it against any surface.

Do you have a rash? Does it feel like it's burning?

If you don't trust your PCP's analysis then maybe the ER would be the place to go. That's their job, to figure out what symptoms indicate, maybe run a few tests to eliminate possibilities. When you go to a neurologist they will only look for problems in their specialty (when you got a hammer everything looks like a nail).
If it were me I'd feel better knowing it wasn't a blood clot (DVT) or something serious.

andrea, no rash yet. just the pain. pcp said the pain is the first symptom and happens on one side of your body.
ima, yeah, i'd like to get an mri of my pelvic area to see if it is the nerve. i do have pain in my lower back, too.
i'm calling my gi doctor on monday to see what he thinks. i always run everything by him before i make any treatment plans.
if it is shingles, i am totally getting off imuran. such a stupid drug for me to be on.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. I'm not a doctor but when I first read your symptoms I would have never guessed shingles. That really doesn't sound right to me. I've had shingles twice and have since got the shot. I'm not saying your doctor is wrong, maybe he is the Hudini of docs. Usually shingles is not a constant pain but an irregular one unless you have let it gone on too long in which case there could be permanent nerve damage and the Valtrex wouldn't do a darn thing. But your doctor claims that he believes it just started, in which case you shouldn't have permanent nerve damage and the Valtrex should work. I second the advice of trying to get another opinion somehow without having to have to take time off work.

Have you started the Valtrex? Because if it is shingles, you're really going to wish you started it right away, as it can substantially lessen the symptoms/ duration.
I had shingles on my face, and I couldn't bear having a single strand of hair touch that area of my face, as it caused so much pain. A week of shingles was basically constant pain interspersed with bouts of even more pain. If fabric brushing against your leg is causing pain, I'd not be surprised that it is shingles. (Shingles often is triggered by stress ... like starting a new job?)

Oh no banana. That stinks. I think you should get another opinion too but I don't know if a neurologist is the way to go. When I read you post I definitely didn't think shingles but I don't know much about
shingles. I have heard shingles is very uncomfortable and painful and that seems to match what you describe... I hope you're better soon so you can get back to working. Seems like we never catch a break. Maybe the ER is not a bad idea since this is persisting and your gp didn't seem to offer any great direction or even testing. What if it were a blood clot or something serious...

Eleventyseven is right. If it is shingles you need to start the Valtrex yesterday. It works great if you start it immediately after shingles is active. If you wait too long then it will do absolutely nothing and you will be very sorry. I still question the diagnosis though.

Gosh. I didnt even consider a blood clot. Now im scared! I really dont wanna do an ER visit since its $100. Uhh this sucks.
Yeah, my pcp was not very helpful. He said i couldnt have a compressed nerve because im too skinny.
I just got home from the doc when i posted this so i havent dropped off the prescript
ion yet. I wasnt expecting him to say shingles either. This pain only started after lounging so it seems so random!
I wish it wasnt the weekend because i wouldve called to see a neuro asap. I am hoping that is what it is and not shingles. My mom hasnt had chicken pox yet and i cant infect her! It was bad enough when she caught c diff!

I hate to scare you either but from your original post I would pick blood clot over shingles, but it is very possible you just damaged a nerve somehow.

Keep watch for any signs of a small patch of a rash on that leg (anywhere from buttock to bottom of foot). It could be very small - like the size of a couple of pimples or mosquito bites. If you see a rash, that'd be a good indication that it's shingles.

Ok. I will keep track of any rashes. I will drop off the script
tomorrow so i have it.
If its a blood clot, wouldnt i be dead already? I mean, the pcp examined my leg and didnt mention it. My heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen were all normal. He didnt do any blood work because i begged him not to. I get too much from my gi already.

A blood clot can move into your heart or lungs and kill you, or it can just stay in a peripheral blood vessel and interfere with circulation and blood supply to the area.
Honestly, the first thing I thought of also was a clot. We're more likely to get them. You do need to get this checked out because urgent treatment may be needed for a clot.

My dad had a blood clot in his arm. Swelled it up. I know blood clots in the legs can cause swelling also and sometimes people can get them on long plane flights just from sitting too long. Maybe it's a good sign if there is no swelling but a blood clot can stay somewhere for a while and then move to a more dangerous area as Judy says. My main thought is you have damaged a nerve somehow, no blood clot and no shingles but you really should get this checked out ASAP because it could be something extremely dangerous.

Ok. Well, maybe i will head to the ER tomorrow. I will cry if they admit me. I will be fired for sure. At least i could get some tests done quicker than waiting to see another doc in a few weeks.

I'd want a 2nd opinion, too. I think your first thought matches more than a clot, but I'm not a doctor. It sounds like an issue involving the nervous system if you're so sensitive to touch. Nerve pain is intense. Shingles does involve the nerves, so he's not far fetched to suspect that might be the cause.
Are your lymph nodes in your groin swollen on the side you are experiencing the problem with? I noticed my lymph nodes before the rash developed. When I had shingles on my face, my lymph nodes were very easy to find by touch. My hands were almost drawn to them b/c of the thick feeling in my jaw. Some of the back pain might be your lymph nodes, too. The bruise is what has me wondering.
What helped me with the pain was placing a thin cloth on my skin and a bag of frozen peas on top of that area. Icing the area felt wonderful. Mine popped up on a Florida vacation while relaxing. Though my vacation was peaceful, the weeks leading up to that vacation were complete chaos. My fate was likely sealed before I set foot on the beach.
I hope you get answers today!

Since it sounds like you already have a plan I will just add one more thing... your mom should get the varicella vaccine! It can be administered to adults as well as children and it's way easier to do that than live through a first bout of chicken pox as an adult.

I agree with the er as a good idea to rule out other things and find out quickly. If nothing show up there and your gut is telling you it is from laying on the lawn chair, maybe a chiropractor could tell if your spine is pinching on a nerve.
Keep us posted and hope you feel better soon!

I think it's more than just a pinched nerve, especially if the pain is intense along the area skin when lightly touched.
I actually get that along my face more often than I'd like, and it's not a pinched nerve. It seems it's something that does follow a nerve route from the ear to my face, but inflammation. I get ulcerations on my gums, but they're not herpes (had them swabbed).
It also switches from side to side. I've had this since I was 20.
Some do get shingles without the vesicles, and some who do get them can have pain that continues.
Do pursue it with your neurologist.
How are you today?

hey guys.
still no improvement today. i'm gonna call a neurologist tomorrow for an appointment. i still haven't developed a rash yet.
i just don't feel like it's shingles. seems so random for it to only start after i was laying down for so long, but i don't really know how shingles works anyway. don't think it's a blood clot since there is no redness, hard spots, or swelling anywhere. i will still drop off the valtrex prescript
ion today so i have it in case i see a rash.
i'm off wednesday so i hope i can get in to see someone then. i really don't want this to cause permanent nerve damage since it's such a huge area of my body.
it's so odd though. i have bruises all over the outside of my thighs and back. i was examing for a rash today and noticed bruises everywhere.
the plastic chairs were very uncomfortable but i really wanted a tan. i feel stupid now!

There's a condition... I forget what it's called but will try and look it up. I had it when I was younger. You sort of wake up with all these bruises... My mom was afraid to take me to the doctor cause it looked like she beat me - my legs and abdomen.
For me there was no pain though - or pain from anything touching. It's bugging me that I can't think of the name....
The cause is swelling of the fat cells under the skin. Common to people with inflammatory diseases. What the heck is the name of it... Grrr..

Erythema nodosum:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erythema_nodosum
EDIT: Some people seem to describe quite a bit of pain with this as well... similar to what you describe.
