Insurance company has assigned a nurse case manager

My company is pretty large and has self medical insurance which is handled by a large medical insurance company(name withheld on purpose). This large medical insurance company has assigned a case nurse manager after the diagnosis of UC of my daughter. This case nurse keeps calling me every 2 weeks for status. Is it normal to have a nurse case manager assigned?

Because my company is self insured will they find ways to reduce cost by laying off people if medical bills keep piling?

I had a nurse case manager for a while. They're usually assigned for people with complex diagnoses, to assist with communication between the insurer, healthcare providers and insurance company. Mine was quite helpful, actually, when I needed help in getting the insurance company drones to understand why I needed non-routine treatments or equipment.

If the CM is calling you very frequently, I'd ask him or her call less frequently, perhaps once a month. This person can be a real helper if you get him or her on your side, in my experience.

I'd agree with Judy, the case manager would be a huge benefit to people that don't know much about the diagnosis that they or their family member has been given. I had good doctor care after initial diagnosis, but it would have been nice to have someone checking in, letting me know more about treatments and resources. It took my own investigation years later to understand that the severe mood swings I was having after initial diagnosis were my reaction to prednisone. I went and saw a counselor several times, when they could have just told me that sometimes prednisone does that to people.

Just make sure to set some boundaries if you feel too overwhelmed by the case manager nurse. Chances are she'll respect them and really does care about your daughter.
