having surgery for parathyroid gland ? on balsalazide dosing

I am scheduled on Friday for surgery- parathyriodectomy (one bad parathyroid gland) I will have the surgery in the morning and they will watch for several hours and I guess I will be staying overnight at hospital and then go home the next day.

My question is about my balsalazide pills. I currently am taking 3 pills in the morning, 3 pills afternoon and 3 pills at night, but on the day of surgery I am concerned that after I take my 3 pills in the morning, I may or not be able to take the afternoon pills due to my being in recovery and then I will have to take the night pills later. But some say there may be a problem swallowing after this kind of surgery (at first anyway) so I was wondering if I should maybe take more pills in the morning (like 4), skip the afternoon and then take 5 at night in some applesauce if I am having trouble swallowing.

Does anyone know if this makes sense or should I just not worry and do the 3 x 3 thing and just hope I can swallow the afternoon and night pills.

I agree with Sherry that you should raise the issue of your UC med with your doctor prior to the procedure. So the parathyroid is what made you feel ill after returning from Aruba? I hope you'll be on the mend soon, and let us know how you're doing. / Old Hat (33 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I would also check with your doctor or pharmacist, but I do think you could open up the capsule and put them in applesauce.
