I'd like to talk with people who have experienced these mucous accidents. Does anyone get this? It's very discouraging and I'm doing all I can. I'm maxed out on mesalamine meds and don't want to go to steroid anything.

If you have this symptom, I'd like to hear from you.

I just Googled about this and sure enough my posts from 2011 came up about the same thing. And I thought this was something new!!

My vote is a temp course of steroids or stronger medications e.g., 6mp/imuran/aza.

Steroid enemas are very low dose and work quickly. You might try them first, I know it isn't the way you want to go, but they are the "lesser evil" of all the options.

Yeah, I am going to vote for a steroid rectal. Either cortifoam or anucort hc. Both low steroid and after some time, you may be able to do well on just the mesalamine again.

My doc is against any type of steroids in my case and wants me to manage on mesalamines. I've added Canasa regularly (a.m. and p.m.) and making sure I'm doing my enemas every night, inserting more carefully.

If I had mucus accidents coming out between bms, it would be because of slight inflammation/flare, or maybe something you ate if it was a one/two time thing in succession and then nothing, or maybe an invader/virus/bug that's working its way through.

Are you on probiotics?

Are you taking in more fruit than usual?

It states in your signature that you are taking fruit smoothies, sometimes these are a bad thing for UC, not sure if you are, but its maybe worth giving them a miss for a week to see.

I had problems with that 40 years before I got UC. Wasn't eating much and no fiber at all. Too much cheese. Constipated. Got a lot worse when I ended up in a body cast and in bed 24/7. Might have nothing to do with UC. IBS, internal hemoriod that hasn't started bleeding...

Try a bunch of psylium husk? Large bowl of oatmeal every morning?

I'm eating oatmeal every a.m. I might suspend some of the things I eat. But I do usually manage well on my diet. This may not be a time that I do. My GI attributes stress.

j2h, I have mucus accidents too. You're not alone. When I was in my first years of this disease, I used long lady pads to help with that. Whenever I farted, mucus would come out... Enemas help with that. I'm using them right now because I'm having mucus again and I don't want this to become a full blown flare.

Yes I've had mucus accidents. Mostly if I can't get to the toilet in time. If you wear a pad that could help so you don't worry about dirtying your pants. good luck.

If I have gas it's mostly mixed with mucus, but you can let air out w/o the mucus IF you lift your legs and bum in the air and then let the air out. Do not let air out when you are laying on your back. Make sure to elevate your legs and bum and air should come out w/o mucus. At least that is how it works for me.

That's an excellent idea Gracie Girl. I think I've tried that and it worked. Seem to be doing OK with increase in mesalamines.
