I am diagnosed with UC 3 months ago. I took Lialda for a month or so. I was having neck pains and fever. GI did not know it was disease or Lialda. He switched me to Asacol HD (800mg 3 times a day). Asacol HD put me in remission and I am taking it for about 4 weeks.
about 2 weeks ago, I had severe pain in my right calf of the leg and then I went to bathroom. I do not remember much after that, but I woke up on the floor sweating. Since then I am OK.
For a week now I have itchy scalp and during evening I itch on my body too.
Are these all symptoms of allergic reaction to mesalamine? Is reducing the dose would help? Would my body get used to med and itching/rash eventually go away like neck pain, fever etc.? What other meds can I take? Thanks,

This is something you might need to discuss with your prescribing doctor. :)

Without knowing your history and what other medications you are taking, it is difficult to tell if the mesalamine is causing it, though that would be my armchair physician guess (assuming it occurs shortly after you take it).

I hope you get your current problems figured out but I do want to say that you are making a huge, huge, huge, mistake to stop the Asacol after 4 weeks. Did I say huge? UC is a lifelong chronic disease that will be with you forever so you have to treat it forever. You should thank your lucky stars that you found something so easy to put you into remission. If you stop your meds your UC is pretty much guaranteed to come back and it often comes back worse and what you used before to put you into remission often does not work as well the second time around and sometimes doesn't work at all and the next thing you know you will be looking at worse and worse meds with many more side effects. You might want to try a daily 24 hour antihistamine and see if that gets you through your current problems.

Yes, it could be, but you really should have liver enzyme testing to make sure some results aren't high.

Are you on birth control and are you a smoker?

Hi Gary,
I do not want to stop the med. Just looking for a solution to the current problem. I will call my GI today. What happens if liver enzymes are off? Does another med is prescribed along with Asacol?

Any advise on supplements that I should take? I am taking multi-vitamin and calcium.


I do not smoke or not on birth control. Never had any health issues until this year. Always ate healthy and walked 2-3 miles before all these started this year.

I agree, but only if you are not allergic to the Asacol, or you are certain Asacol isn't causing the problem.. That may be the case. I am allergic to mesalamines and glad that I didn't remain on them. It gave me flu-like and pleurisy-like symptoms.

That you blacked out in the bathroom should be a huge red flag that something is wrong.
