Hi. I'm Sam and I am new to the forum. I was diagnosed with UC in 2008 and have been in and out of the hospital constantly for it. I am currently at the beginning of a flare-up but it's not bad enough to go to the hospital. My doctor put me on Uceris (sp?) and I'm hoping that works. I usually eat whatever I want but I am trying to not make my condition worse. Are things like pasta and breads ok or should I be trying something else?

Hey Tatum09. Welcome to the forum.
Uceris (like prednisone) gives a ravenous appetite and you gotta eat what you gotta eat (listen to your cravings). If you are healing, low residue foods might help ease the process along.
Best.

honestly, when i'm flaring badly, i can't even drink liquids without it hurting. i usually just eat whatever my body tells me to eat and kind of say "screw it" to my regular diet. i've had periods where i eat lots of hummus with lays potato chips, tortilla chips and salsa, wedding soup, angel hair pasta with sauce and steamed broccoli, ritz crackers with cheese melted on top, and those packages of stroganoff noodles with god awful ingredients. it really makes no difference in my disease activity so it's really about
getting my flare under control with meds. after that, i get back to my regular diet.
if you do well with pasta and bread, eat it. low fiber is generally best when you are flaring but there was something about
steamed broccoli during one of my flares that i just couldn't stop eating!!

There is no one size fits all when it comes to things to eat so you can't really expect much by asking. Some will tell you to quit eating pasta and breads while many others will say that it's ok. What do you mean by pasta? Noodles themselves aren't usually bad but tomato sauces and cheeses can be very bad for some of us. After having this for 6 years you should have figured out by now which foods you can eat and which ones you can't. Were you taking anything at the time they put you on Uceris? What all meds have you been on from the beginning? Just from the few lines of your post it doesn't sound like you have a good treatment plan at all for staying in remission and that's why you keep having problems. It also doesn't sound like you have got a handle on which foods are good for your UC and which ones aren't. Are you taking any probiotics? Please give us more info.

I try not to eat a lot when I am flaring, but while on any type of steroid, even Uceris, I have to eat quite a bit. I think eating light is the best thing for me but as far as knowing what to eat, I am terrible at that. When things were at their worst, I ate a lot of PBJ and soups. Seems like everyone reacts differently to foods and it takes a lot of trial and error to find out what works well for you.

Hi Tantum,
From my experience and recommendations from my doctor, homemade bone broth soup is best. Breads, pastas, hard to digest proteins and fats will wreak havoc on an inflamed gut.
A great product i recommend (formulated for IBD patients) is called UltraInflamX. You can purchase it on PureFormulas.com. It's a protein shake.
