I have a 2-week supply of budesonide I took on a trip but never had to use it. I see the GI at the end of August, but I'm getting really tired of the symptoms and thinking of starting this medication. Are there pred side effects?

On the latest scope, almost a year ago, inflammation was in the transverse and the GI started to suspect CD because the problem used to be in the sigmoid. Pathology is consistent with either UC or CD.

Since Uceris is extended release budesonide what makes one preferable over the other? Uceris may be for UC and budesonide for right-sided CD, but how about the transverse in the absence of definitive pathology?

Why do you have budesonide in the first place that was never used? I don't know if Uceris is technically "extended release budesonide". It has a different coating on it so it dissolves in a different part of the colon. While these can have systemic steroid side effects, they are usually nowhere near prednisone. Uceris is more for UC. Why aren't you taking 4.8 grams of Lialda?

I think for the transverse colon you need an oral mesalamine. Enemas will only cover the rectum and sigmoid colon, up the descending colon if you're lucky.

Oral budesonide MIGHT get tot he transverse colon but who knows?

Gary: why am I not on 4.8 grams of Lialda? Glad you asked!! Chest pain and shortness of breath, big time. Please someone, ask Google to look for "mesalamine chest pain" and tell me I'm not crazy. I had 2 GI's tell me the connection was impossible and that has been one of the big frustrations of this whole journey. All I want is for an MD to look me in the eye and say, "Ya, I have heard of that; rare but real."

I worry that there might be some subclinical damage from the lower dose, but 2.4 grams does work, after a fashion. I did post the question here about this side effect some time ago but no one who responded had a similar experience.

I carried the budesonide with me on a long trip. At the time I was feeling OK but I wanted a backup plan in case things went downhill. I actually asked for Uceris or even pred, but he prescribed budesonide.
