Steam sauna

Steam sauna while on Humira and Azathioprine, good idea or not?

I'm on Azathioprine (but not Humira) and I use both a dry sauna or a steam room several times a week with no problems.

I think the question here is more about hydration than it is about specific drugs.

Obviously a sauna has the potential to dehydrate you so be a bit careful. Hydration is very important for people with IBD in my book - not that a GI has even told me that or given me a word of advise outside of medication. Some things (everything) you have to find out for yourself!

I go swimming a lot and I used to go for a sauna after every time but now I have stopped, the difference in recovery is amazing. Going without one makes me feel much better. Hydration is king.

I guess I intended the question to be a catch all, thank you for your good responses. Also wasn't sure if the environment within the sauna could be a breeding ground for little nasties wait to get me, while on these immunosuppressive drugs. The sauna I have access maintains a temperature of 160 F.

Edit, it is in a gym and many people also have access.

I have never understood the appeal of saunas, it seems like a slow kind of torture to me...and its most definitely a breeding ground for all sorts of horrible stuff..Yuck!

That's the same reason that I don't eat at Fast Food Restaurants or most restaurants because it only takes one person who doesn't care about their job. I'm not saying that there aren't workers at these places that care about their jobs but I do know that there are a few of them that really hate their jobs.

sauna isn't at 160 continually....so....

But if you love them...make sure you have a towel to specifically sit on (and don't use it to wipe yourself afterward). Wear wet area footwear (is that allowed?), and put them in a separate towel and clean them and air dry thoroughly when you get home. Wash towels with hot water and vinegar and vinegar in the rinse..or bleach in the wash.
If you find a regimen that will help protect yourself, it might not be a problem.
Just be aware.


ks...I eat out less often than I used to and have rarely had an issue....but that's not to say buggaboos haven't gone through and whatever has come out maybe in more of a hurry the next day. I don't eat fast food much at all.

Actually, it's other areas we touch that are more of an issue for me....such as door handles, interac/credit card machines, money....etc.
I sterilise my phone when I come home and wipe everything I purchase at the store. I also never put my purse on a floor and clean it often as well.
I can go on and on....zzzzz
