Thanks, all, for the feedback and advice. It was a good counterpoint to the "I cured myself with this wonderful diet and now I wrote a book about
it" stories I've been reading.
To iPoop: I did try Remicade back in 2003 but it didn't help me. That's one reason I'm reluctant to try Humira - that and the long list of side effects. I know a woman who had Crohn's and died in her 30s of a stroke after going on Humira. That's what scared me into seeking alternatives.
To Garylouisville: I have done a lot of research and I do understand that finding any successful treatment (both Rx and alternative therapies) is trial and error. I'm not looking for a magical cure -- I was just hoping to find someone more knowledgeable than me to guide the trial and error process and help make sure I don't do more harm than good.
It's also very possible that diet mods won't work for me. I've never found any foods that make my flare-ups markedly better, or worse. I avoid alcohol, coffee and very rich or spicy foods, because they just don't sound good, but other than that I eat a balanced diet with lots of anti-inflammatory foods like avocado, yogurt, salmon, kale and blueberries. I asked my GI about
probiotics but she said to wait until I am off prednisone, which, if I am lucky, will be in 4-5 months. I just got out of the hospital after having a blood transfusion because my hgb/hct got too low. Pinning my hopes on prednisone + increased dose of 6MP, which helped me before when steroids didn't. Just hope it doesn't kill my bone marrow first.
