Either Crohn's or UC can affect the rectum with inflammation (known as proctitis) or the colon, when crohn's is affecting the colon it's referred to as crohn's colitis, CD can affect any part of the GI tract from mouth to anus but UC is limited to the rectum/colon, UC generally starts in the rectum (inflammation of the rectum is referred to as proctitis) and then moves in the to colon. Crohn's can also affect more than one area at a time as well throughout the GI tract.
Crohn's inflammation differs from UC inflammation, with CD the inflammation is patchy (inflammation basically marbled with healthy tissue) and can also go through the layers of the intestinal lining, with UC it's not patchy inflammation, instead the entire affected area will be inflamed and UC stays on the surface of the lining always, unlike CD where it can (but not necessarily always) affect the multiple layers of the intestinal lining.
