Mortifying accident in the airport

I've been in a flare up for about six months now. Mornings are always worse - always have been. This week I had to leave the house at 6:30 a.m. To catch a flight and I used the bathroom before leaving, used the bathroom at the airport, was fine for the flight, then without warning on the escalator, BAM uncontrollable diarrhea hit. And before I could find a restroom it hit again. I was mortified. Ive had accidents before but not so fast like this. I'm thinking I have to wear depends for situations like this now, but even then, wouldn't the smell be an issue? Mortified! Simply mortified.

Abbytrav, sorry to hear you had an accident uc truly sucks. I've been there and done that when I was flaring badly a year and a half ago. I've had two accidents at work, two while driving, one at the grocery store, and numerous close calls. So I get it and how emotionally destroying it is. All you can do is cleanup and move on. What to do, number one is be aggressive with your uc treatment regiment, try stronger drugs and get uc under control as quickly as you can. While you are waiting to get better, take anti-diarrhea meds such as imodium before traveling, skip a meal before going (as food in the gut can stimulate bms), avoid caffeine (a stimulant that can move bowel muscles), eat lightly during the day, and bring an emergency kit (a ziplock bag consisting of wipes, tp, and a change of underwear) which can be concealed in a purse or backpack. Some do wear pads, or depends, depending on bathroom availability and the severity of urgency.

What uc drugs and dosages are you currently on, perhaps we can advise?

I've had a LOT of accidents during my most recent flare. Fortunately, mine are not usually really stool--just LOTS of blood and mucus--almost like pudding. So the odor isn't overwhelming. But it's enough to totally fill an extra-long overnight sanitary pad and often spill over. Never (yet) through my pants though. I ALWAYS wear a pad now, and since a particularly nasty incident recently I also carry extra underwear. I'm thinking about getting a pair of lightweight pants that I could fit in my purse too. This is the FIRST time I've actually spoken freely about this--thank god for this forum.
The problem with not eating before a morning trip, for me anyway, is that if my stomach is empty I still get the accidents along with the added pleasure of uncontrollable throwing up of bile because my stomach is empty. The last time I went out early in the a.m. was for a doctor's appointment. I made 3 stops along the way during what should have been a 20 minute drive and was 30 minutes late.
Now, I honestly try to just not schedule anything before 10 a.m. I get up, hydrate, have lots of bathroom time, eat a little something before I even leave the house. Fortunately, I have a very flexible workplace.
Is it wrong that knowing that others have gone through this gives me a strange comfort? Honestly, I have felt like the most disgusting person on the face of the earth for the past several months...

So sorry. I had more accidents than I care to remember. Depends never helped. I tried them and it would just ooze out the sides. Maybe there is another brand that protects better.

I don't think the point of the depends is to cover smell, it is to help enable cleaning up. It is going to smell if you have an accident. I am so sorry this happened to you. I have literally 5 seconds to get to the toilet a lot of the time. I notice the more I try to hold it, the more I have to go. It's so frustrating.
