Simponi pre meds?

I've been having serious hives from my past two shots. i always have swollen tissue/joints from the shots but the hives are the most recent fun side effect. i've been popping benadryl a lot just to function. i called my doctor and he said he'd like to have me take a big dose of prednisone the day before my shot and the day of my shot. no taper.

i've never had any pre meds for remicade or humira. does anyone else need this?

does it still cause the typical prednisone side effects? i take the shot once a month so that means a big dose of pred that often. i've been off of pred since january and have osteoporosis. i REALLY hate the thought of having to take it again!!

When I was taking remicade, they premeditated with me solu-medrol iv (dose unknown but I'm sure it was equivalent to 30 mg of pred or more) and benedryl since I suffered an allergic reaction to humira. Doctor wanted to play it safe I guess.

I didn't really suffer any side-effects other than fatigue after the infusions. The naps afterwards would help and I'd be okay the following day. I'm pretty sure it would be different this time around since antibiotics wrecked my joints last year.

I think short-term pred (1-5 days) wouldn't impact the state of your bones much. :)

What is a big dose? I don't think it's going to hurt you to take pred two days per month. It's when you take a big dose and then taper to infinity over and over again that it wears your body down. It might be a good game plan. Do you still have to take the benydryl if you do this?

Banana, sorry about the hives...I just posted, I'm in complete remission now.

Are you sure it's the Simponi doing this? I mean it happens right after the shot? It could be you just are making antibodies to it, which is unfortunate since the whole idea of Simponi was that no one was supposed to generate them, that was it's selling point....

guardian, good to know. he didn't specify the dose but i assume it would probably be the standard 40 mg. not sure though. the last thing i want is pred side effects again.

gary, i take benadryl daily for the hives. they are so bad. if the pred doesn't help, i will still take the benadryl.

scott, i'm positive it's the simponi. the hives just began after my last shot in september. then they have gotten worse since my shot last night. i asked my doctor if i could get an antibody test, but he told me to do the pred and to take zyrtec, singulair, and zantac daily. just sucks because i hate taking all these crappy meds. i'd rather just stop the simponi if my body is rejecting it.
