I think the thing with sugary foods is the bacteria they feed in your gut. Since we don't have as much diversity as a normal person then in some cases this could feed the wrong bacteria and throw our guts even more out of balance. I gave up all sweets once for three weeks but it made no difference in me, which gave me a sigh of relief. I think it just depends on your microbial makeup and how the sugar reacts with it. 50 - 100 years from now they will have individual treatment plans for all of us, depending on the microbial population we have.
I agree with gary about
the sweets causing the wrong microbes to bloom. But dense carbs (e.g., bread) should work the same way. So some piece of the puzzle is missing here.
I am also more optimistic that we will have individual treatments in closer to a decade than 5 or 10 decades.

The raw vegetable is a combination of fiber being high residue, and many vegetables are gassy.
