Birth Control Implant with Imuran(Azathioprine)

Has anyone here gotten the birth control implant while taking imuran (or azathioprine is the generic version). I just am not sure still of any birth control options besides condoms that are ok on this medication and would prefer to not take birth control pills. I also have heard the IUD is not effective with this drug. Thanks!

Have you talked to your OB/Gyn? I have never heard that these meds affect the efficacy of IUDs.

I don't have an OBGYN currently, i used to see one at my college but have not found a local one and after getting diagnosed have had a hard time wanting to see any other doctors than my GI...I get so nervous about another doctor not knowing my full history/severity of my disease. And there's a giant warning label on my meds about not using BC pills or IUDs ....

There are two kinds of IUDs. One releases hormones (Mirena and maybe a new one) and the other does not (Paraguard). I can't imagine that the one that does not release hormones would have any effect on your medication. It's kind of a physical barrier/way of making sure that eggs can't implant.

I have the ParaGard IUD and I'm very happy with it since any kind of hormonal birth-control always made my UC worse. If you're looking for something longer-term and you don't want to think it about every day, I'd recommend it.

Before considering an implant that releases hormones, you should make sure that you do okay on hormonal birth control. Something like the pill or the ring can be stopped or removed immediately versus an implant that's more of a procedure.

Unfortunately, in my experience, doctors don't know much about hormones and UC. For some of us, they are closely connected.
