Is our diet just too good?

This is an old study,but now have to wonder if we are eating/supplementing
too many antioxidants. Something defective in iNOS pathway too much arginase,or SOD, not enough nitrate in diet. If I supplement with arginine,makes the UC worse,but that's now,what if I supplemented when first got UC.

I am still hot on the trail at just about all of the IBD drugs including biologics since 1942 control/kill MAP, except possibly pred. I ran across this study below. But right now not concerned with MAP in general,but something a little

different.

I mention many times over fortification of food, and importation of lots of fruits and veggies since say,late 1800's.

What if we are creating some form of immune deficiency with excess, antioxidants from an overly good diet,where the immune killing power is blunted,and in our case we can't clear bacteria efficiently in our guts.

Remember the DSS mice get better after the DSS is withdrawn,even after a massive chemical attack on the colon.

This might fit in well with the mucus breach theory, where once we have a breach,we cannot ward off

the massive bacteria invasion of the mucosa,because our killing power is prevented by excessive antioxidants,and other vitamins that suppress killing power.
Also I might add, when I supplemented with SOD, I got much much worse, perhaps now I know why. Was quenching peroxides, and impairing my killing power.
Perhaps the research docs concentrate on inflammation,and cytokine pathways too much and are not looking enough into immune clearance of bacterial invasion of the mucosa,and immune killing power in general.

Just starting to look into this.

This is also Jim Watson (nobel prize winner for DNA) theory though applied to diabetes and cancer - one of the two guys that first properly defined the chemical structure of DNA is big on this. To much antioxidants causing problems.

His theory is there is a balance between them. First proposed for the increase in diabetes and now extending to cancer. He's obviously a very smart guy and taken seriously in the research community.

Essentially he states that we're lazy, don't exercise and eat/supplement with a lot of antioxidants causing an imbalance. This leads to altered properties. Lot's of info if you search say Jim Watson and antioxidants.Eg rsob.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/3/1/120144 though this is on cancer. Worth a read though as it eludes to this very thing.

Ok going to start adding stuff here,will see where this goes. If I find something really interesting will bump
with new post. This ROS paper is real interesting,but what I am really looking for is impaired killing,with

excess antioxidants which quench the immune systems bacteria killing chemicals too fast. Might be difficult or not to find info. In crohns for instance they are not only dysbiotic at early onset but there is higher counts of bacteria in the small intestine then there should be,in general. For us we have been penetrated past the mucus barrier.

I have had this monster inside me for 34 years now. Continually learning to manage and what to avoid eating. Here is my list, if I stay off these things I stay in remission , trick is Food industry changes fast. Carrageenan is the worst the Soy Lecithin and the Soy. All replace Gellitan as an emulsifier for food. Read up on these, you will never eat again.

One example is artificial folic acid substituting for natural folate, 5-MTHF which is much more easily absorbed. Ordinary folic acid as used in dietary supplements, multivitamins, and vitamin-fortified foods must first be converted to bioactive 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) in order to be clinically effective. Otherwise it might become toxic.

These steps require several enzymes, adequate liver and gastrointestinal function, and sufficient supplies of niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), riboflavin (B2), vitamin C, and zinc. Many IBDers, especially Cronnies, are deficient some of these nutrients, especially zinc.
