My husband was diagnosed with UC in Sept and has been in a bad flare ever since. He was in the hospital for nearly a week in mid-Oct and came home on prednisone (60mg/day, now tapered to 25mg) as well as remicade infusions. Things were going smoothly (mostly) until last night when the diarrhea/frequency/discomfort/gas/nausea picked up.

I spoke to our (amazing) GI and she said to up the prednisone by 10mg (thinks the taper may have been too fast) and see if that helps. We are still very new to this and looking for suggestions to help calm this situation down at home. Already trying hot baths w peppermint oil...

Since he is newly diagnosed and tapering prednisone, I hope that moving his dose back up will give fast relief. Stick to low residue, easily digested foods to keep the discomfort at a minimum.

He should also be on other meds because once he comes off pred it comes back. Good luck!!

V hard to tell - hes been eating the same plain chicken, rice and plain pasta w every meal. We want to try SCD but were told to wait until after the 3rd remicade dose.

Hi...welcome to the forum!

Has your husband not been on other meds such as mesalmine?

Has he been checked for invaders in his gastro tract through stool samples?

nothing in food would would have caused his regression UC-wise. Hope he improves once the pred is increased.

why do you think peppermint in bath will help him?

He was intolerant of asacol/rowasa so we moved on to remicade. Stool samples/c diff tests have all come back ok.

Just really looking for tricks for home when the flares start (or to help calm it once it started). This is all so new for us!

Peppermint oil is a salicylate....so....its possible that his intolerance to mesalamine, which is a salicylate, would probably not be good skin-wise.

Not that it will affect his UC directly....it might be an overload on his system in general which can affect his UC while he's tapering pred.

is he on any probiotics?

Hes not taking any probiotics. Should he be?

Many of us here do take probiotics. A popular brand is VSL. It is expensive but has been shown to help UC. If you look in the signature area of many posters you can see others brands used. It's a good idea to start slow and gradually increase dose. Otherwise he may experience extra gas and bloating.
