Polydextrose, Soluble corn fiber, anyone tried?

I came across www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21736814, looks promising to me. I wonder if anyone has tried either or both of these to modulate gut flora.

If anyone researched this, any reason why one should not try?

sometimes it seems like high school days when a bunch of us mostly drunk idiots would sit around trying figure out what stupid adventure we should attempt next - as many of you know, it usually turned out badly, with at least one guy maimed for life ;-)
