So I have been using half bottle of the Mesa enemas and I finally, absolutely realize that I do not tolerate it. Last night I woke up in middle of the night nausaus and so sick. I had a fever and my sinus and my whole nose so sore to touch. I had heaves and fever and just incredibly sick. Felt like flu or food poisionong.

Done. No more, I am just using Canasa and hydrocortizone for butt meds from now on. But isn't the sinus thing weird?

Omg at least I can sit up and feeling somewhat better. First day I missed cause of UC in a while. This flare and meds are killing me. I just cried and cried like a big ol baby. You just never know whats going on and that is so scary.

You can't continue to torture yourself if you're intolerant. I am surprised you can tolerate Canasa if you can't tolerate enemas but I guess that's a good thing.

I know it's so weird!!! But I think I read canasa has less sulfa

Are you sure you didn't have the flu? Lots of stuff is going around. It is kind of weird to tolerate Canasa and not the other.

Nope, not weird at all to tolerate Canasa but not mesalamine enemas if you have an allergy to the sulfite preservative that's in all meslamine enemas (except for the sulfite free Rowasa). Canasa doesn't have sulfite preservative, nor do the oral mesalamine meds.

It is so strange that you continue to say you can't tolerate the mesalamine, even while you point to the sulfate. and of course you take other rectal and oral mesalamine. I realize you are saying that you can't tolorate the ones you have - but you just say "mesala" and "it", with no mention of sulfa. This could lead some readers to overestimate chances of mesalamine intolerance - and fail to understand about sulfa reactions.

I agree you should stop using something that makes you feel so bad, and the sulfate-free ones are very expensive. May be something you can't do financially.

I hope you can hit on a therapy that works.

Thanks guys. It is weird. When I got dx I was on colizal for a long time and it worked until the headaches were excruciating. Then dr put me on Apriso. I still have headaches but not as bad. I don't know why or what or how. I just know that the enemas really get me.

It could be a flu too!! I just don't know and I am weary as you all are of trying to figure it out. ;-(

I am sorry, I don't understand. You don't tolerate mesalamine enema, but Canasa doesn't bother you? Aren't they same medications, just in different dosage form?
I suspect, there is something else at play here.

Like I said in my post, there is a sulfite preservative in all mesalamine enemas, EXCEPT the name brand sulfite-free Rowasa, which is different from regular name brand Rowasa, which has sulfite. Canasa (a suppository) does not have the sulfite preservative either.

However, based on more info the OP gave about Colazol and Apriso and headaches, maybe the sulfite isn't the real problem.

Canasa doesn't bother me YET, as a matter of fact I don't think I could function without it this flare.
I have no idea what to think either!
