Question

Hello all. I am new to this, and have to say I love reading everyone's posts and all of the different answers. I really learned a lot!

I was diagnosed with proctitis in my early 20's and have had mild flares though the years. A couple of rowasa enemas a few times a week always took care of that. God I wish it was like that now. So easy!!

A few years back ( now in my forties) I went to the er with D and bad abd pains. Had a cat scan and was told my whole colon was inflamed. Had a GI and was told by my doc that it looks like microscopic colitis with rectal inflammation.

Now, last month had a severe flare, worst abd pain ever ( worse than labor pains) bloody D, 20+ times a day.

Very hard to have this one month before Xmas.

Went to see GI told me the disease may have progressed.

My question is can microscopic colitis turn to left side colitis or pan?
Also when someone has any colitis flare does it always show the whole colon to be inflammed on a cat scan?

Losing sleep over this. I was doing so well for many years, now I am losing weight, everything I eat goes right through me. Reading some of these posts is scary and it breaks my heart.

I have been on uceris for 2 weeks. Not working well. Better but still have pains and bloody D. GI just started me on 40 mg of prednisone. No relief yet, just not sleeping well on it. Thanks, Laura

I'm confused. Were you diagnosed with microscopic colitis or Ulcerative colitis? These are two different conditions but I'm assuming you have UC? But yes Proctitis can spread thru out the colon. It is not known why this happens because in some people they can remain with proctitis with no advancement and other times it can spread slowly or quickly. I was originally diagnosed with Ulcerative proctitis and it has advanced to left sided.

If there is any any inflammation, then most likely it can be seen on a CT scan.

Microscopic colitis...which one do you have? Lymphocytic or collagenous colitis?

Don't get it mixed up with UC, for I wouldn't think its progression pattern would be the same.
"Proctitis" we talk about is actually ulcerative proctitis.

Proctitis that you would have had...if it isn't UC and is MC, then you'd have to clarify this with your doctor.

There are treatments depending on what it is you actually have....so start with that question for absolute definitive diagnosis from your doctor.

As well...make sure you request and receive a copy of the pathology report of your biopsies. Use that to seek information and formulate questions for your doctor.
I sure hope your doctor took biopsies throughout your ENTIRE colon including the cecum...obviously he took them from the rectum considering the results.

What was the reason you did not "like" the asacol? and what enemas were you put on?

Don't know what kind of MC I have. GI doc never told me.
When I was diagnosed with proctitis in my 20's the first GI doc I saw at the time told me rowasa enemas treat better then oral meds. Oral meds won't reach that far down in the rectum area.

The second GI doc treated me the same way. At that time, so much time passed he told me chances are the disease will not progress because I went so many years with just proctitis and was doing well on enemas. He thought i was going to be one of the lucky ones and just have proctitis for the rest of my life.

The dx of mc is when he put me on asacol. After reading the side effects and having to take so many pills I decided to stick with enemas when problems started. Now I know that was a mistake!

Now I don't know what I have. Have a feeling it has progressed and thinking maybe never had mc. Could it have been the start of something more? Have gurgling all through my colon. Right and left pain also. Also if I had inflammation through my whole colon on cat scan, is that pan colitis? God hope it is not crohns?

GI doc told me even though I don't have celiac to stay away from gluten as much as possible. From what I have been reading it causes havoc not only in the colon but all through your body. Effects the brain too.. I am starting slowly with cutting back. No sugar either. ( I am a big sweet eater , so this is tough! ) not stopping coffee though. It is all I have left. LOL

I work at a hospital so I am able to pull blood results and stool samples. Never thought of biopsies. I guess sometime we need to do our own research for answers and some treatment.

All the docs want to do is push meds so they can get a kick back from the pharmaceutical co. Especially the new drugs that come out. I have seen this with my daughter who has schizoeffective disorder. Will be doing great on her meds and as soon as something new comes out, they are pushing to start the new med. crazy!

So now after pred, need to start asacol and enemas. Had to order from Canada. I have a high deductible insurance plan , and enemas and rowasa meds would cost 1000.00 dollars for the first month. Much cheaper in Canada. Thanks all and god bless. Everyone here is in my prayers!

Also has anyone had any luck with aloe elite? Right now I take fish oil, probiotics, multi vit, started tumeric an garlic pills

I had watery D with no blood over the summer. This is all new for me. Lots of blood, D and pain. Last scope about 3 yrs ago. I guess it is time for another one.
