There's a programme airing tonight here on TLC which follows people with conditions which have deemed them 'too ugly for love'. Anthony and Marcia, who have ostomy bags due to their IBD, are featured.

Idk, I don't see the point in watching or paying attention to stuff like this. Active UC makes me too sick to love or go out or have a life anyway. If it came between that and a stoma, i'd gladly take the stoma.

That's an unfortunate way of looking at it. I'm hoping to have a fulfilling love life in the future regardless of whether I get a stoma. I hate the thought of people who have been through such a major surgery feeling inadequate or unloveable, because the truth is they're amazing and brave.

My point was that I don't think a stoma would make me unlovable, and that active UC would definitely prevent me from being able to engage with another person in that way.

It's horrible that anyone would have anything to do with a show like this -- all the people who work together to make it, the television network that airs it, the advertisers. I feel very bad for the people who think so little of themselves that they would agree to be featured on it. Everyone deserves respect and there doesn't seem to be any involved in this enterprise.

This is the worst sort of exploitation. They like to stare & point fingers rather than being empathetic or helpful in any way. Further proof that our society is becoming a sewer of greed and narcissism.
This story and that show are much more disgusting than a stoma or UC could ever be.

Apparently the people featured didn't know that the show was going to end up with such a dreadful name, which I find even sadder - the working title was 'Love Me Warts And All'.

What is ugly is this is the world we live in...that fact that this idea would even cross anyone's mind is heartbreaking....sadly though, not surprising :(

It's totally mean spirited and self-serving for the network but I don't really care, I'll watch a different channel (not that I ever watch TLC). If I don't like something then I change the channel, there are lots of things on TV that I don't like or agree with.

I find it ironic that it the TLC; once it was called The Learning Channel and then they rebranded to the TLC channel and now it is just random garbage shows. Sort of like MTV was once Music Television and not it is Miscellaneous Television.

Yeah I know, it's not like I'd ever watch anything on TLC, but exploitative stuff like this really bothers me. Nobody is too 'ugly' for love, it's promoting such bad body image, and it's upsetting for me because I know a stoma is probably in my future, and the thought that people are promoting the idea on television that I'd be too unattractive for anyone to go near if that happened really upsets me, and puts so much doubt in my mind about getting what could really be life saving surgery.
