Mouth sores

Does anyone else get sores in their mouth just before worsening flare? I mentioned this to my doctor and he seemed to dismiss it as unrelated, but possible. I get sores in my mouth and then my symptoms worsen, the sores go away in a day or two and the symptoms get better at the same time.......

Mouth sores are not typical with uc, that I've heard of. Do you have crohn's disease? More typical of it...

Yes I have gotten sores too. I have told my doctor about them also, but he has not really said much about it. I will usually get one in a certain spot and think at first I must have bit my lip or burned my mouth, then after that one goes away I will get one in another area. Then I know it wasn't something I did and didn't remember :)

I have heard it also occurs more in crohns but I think it is also possible with UC, but just not as common.

I got MANY awful mouth sores when I was flaring! I mentioned it to my GI at the time, and he said it wasn't out of the ordinary for UC patients to have trouble with canker sores. My surgeon, GP and dentist agreed. Though they aren't as bad since having my colon removed, I do still get more of the sores than I did before UC. Another example of how surgery is not a cure for UC.

If the sores really bother you, there are ointments and mouthwashes a dentist or doctor can prescribe for you. There are also some over the counter treatments.

I get them a lot too....I mentioned this to my doc yesterday actually during my entyvio infusion and told him I was concerned that it might point to crohns. He said as long as its on the inside of your lips it's still a UC symstom. It's actually relatively uncommon in both crohns and UC....he said it only occurs in about 1-2% of crohns and UC patiens, but it does occur and not to worry about it, at least as it relates to distinguishing between the two diseases.

I've had canker sores appear too, especially in the past couple of weeks when my UC was acting up bad. I noticed that I started getting sores since a year before I had my first flareup, actually. Didn't know it was an uncommon symptom though.

Funny you should post this. I've just had two in the space of three weeks. Usually I get about two per year. I'm putting it down to just starting on Azathioprine.
