The only clinical evidence of VSL#3 leading to remission was based on 4 packets a day. Everythign else you hear is anecdotal accounts. One packet, or one packet vs 2, or packets vs capsules, or doses less than 4 packets have not been studied.
That said, I do take extra or my probiotic when I get a bit loose or gassy. It usually firms me up a bit the next day. But I found strains that really seemed to work for me by trial and error trying different brands. VSL#3 often made me calmer (ie., gut-mind connection) even just a few hours after taking. But it did not firm my stool as much as other probiotic products. Also, when I tried 4 packets a day, I go a kind of milky smelling vsl colored thick diarrhea.
You could try for a day or two and see. You have to figure out what works for you. It is a fairly safe experiment. But, evaluate day to day. If you try to analyze hour to hour changes you will be pondering a lot of observations that are just noise.
