If you've used other mesalamine med w/o bad reaction, it could be the sulfite preservative in the enema that bothers you. However, bms tend to be more liquid after Rowasa use because this med does not get absorbed into the colon mucosa like steroid retention enemas do. I found that difference very disappointing at first, but tried hard to adjust to Rowasa because it is safer to use longterm than steroids. As Quincy advises, one should have enough patience to stick with Rowasa for a few weeks, unless some major side effect (listed in package insert) occurs, to really gauge whether or not it relieves UC symptoms. So, YES, one can get the initial impression that it makes UC worse instead of better. You need to retain Rowasa for 7 or more hours nightly to get the best possible relief of inflammation. Try a serving of plain boiled white rice daily to see if that helps solidify bms. / Old Hat (34 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
