Gallbladder surgery

Okay, hey guys, more questions about this junk!
So I have a consultation this Thursday for surgery to get my gallbladder removed.

-Are there any specific questions I should ask the surgeon in regards to my UC (and asthma too I guess if you happen to have that)?
-If anyone has had this done, any advice is appreciated.
-Should I call my GI and let them know/ask any questions? If so, what?? My primary said having the surgery done with U of M would be good because that's where my GI doctor is, so I wasn't sure if I should speak with him prior to this.

Also any general experiences with having the stones/surgery is cool too!

I called them, it didn't enlighten me. The nurse basically said they weren't going to stop me and to talk to the surgeon. Well duh! At least they know now I guess.

Are you someone who controls your UC with diet, or at least finds that your diet can impact your UC? Because you will be given a list of things that you can and cannot eat while you are recovering from your surgery. I'm not sure exactly what the diet is like, but my friend had gallbladder surgery recently and had to eat a certain way. It's just temporary; she's back to her normal diet now.

My GI is great but the nurses can be hit or miss. I'll probably talk to the surgeon more in depth. I'd really like to know the reason the stones formed (and why it happened so fast??) especially since my liver enzymes have still been a bit weird (but not nearly as crazy as they were a few weeks ago). And I may be facing a med change (probably lowering my dose). The nurse basically said "The surgeon will be able to talk to the doctor." Well... okay. lol

Speaking of my liver, should I be concerned with any pain meds?? I'm guessing I'd be okay, but maybe I should ask.

Diet generally doesn't affect me, although I have had the urge to go a couple times today (but have only gone twice). That COULD be due to my diet change. I normally eat a lot of starchy foods and right now those are out. So my body might just be adjusting. I'm doing a low fat diet right now, and trying to eat many tiny meals. (I'M SO HUNGRY.) I will add that to the list tho. If I need anything else after the surgery I'm going to want to buy it beforehand.

Red, I did search, but a lot was people like me just wondering about the surgery and not all of them were UC related. What's going on with yours?? Mine came on SO fast, and it's constant pain, it hurts to do pretty much anything. Maybe I'll post here directly after they take it out and you can see me be delirious. But how's that any different from the norm? hehe. Should I ask for the stones? I could make some souvenirs.

Okay good questions! I definitely want to know about the immune suppressant stuff. And also in regards to healing because it seems I heal kind of slowly. Thank you! Will write this stuff down.

Now I have light green skin on the outside! Probably just bruising from the ultrasound. It was a few days ago. But lately I'm freaking out easily. So please forgive me everyone!

Unfortunately I ate the pie not knowing what was wrong and because I wasn't feeling well enough to cook :( and it was cheap.

I did change my diet last week but nothing has improved, aside from it not hurting MORE when I eat. The pain is constant and it hurts to walk, drive, bend over, and now, lay down. I've gotten maybe one hour of very fitful sleep tonight and probably two or three last night. I might end up giving up before I even get to my consultation and go to the ER. I'm going to get bloodwork to check for pancreatitis as soon as I can. It's all tolerable during the day but I just don't know what to do at night. I can't sleep sitting up! Ibuprofen and Tylenol don't do a thing.

I've read that they seem to recommend surgery if you're taking immune suppressants, however I still plan on asking kazbern's and DB's questions at the consultation. And the surgeon may not even decide to take it out in the end.

I would like him involved. I don't think the nurse even talked to him. And if I need a procedure done I need it done before I lose my insurance later this year :( Right now I have good insurance so I'm not too worried about that aspect.

I just want this to be over!

Sounds like a HIDA scan is the way to go.

I haven't yet had issues with pain meds so I'm not too worried about constipation. Good to hear you've been okay with the medication/surgeries.

Still waffling about the ER. I just can't decide.

Yikes: Good luck you are young, I made it to 50.
I had mine lapro, piece of cake.
Colon hurt a bit when it woke up the next day.
Uc is associated with stones.
Also be aware even in normal people increased risk of colon cancer, if I remember correctly.
I remember the pain, worst I have had to this date,so I ran to the surgeon, take this out NOW.
If you have the time or interest ask about complications, such as stones in the main bile duct.
Otherwise the body/colon seems to adjusts to constant bile flow, might take a little time.
I did not seem to have a problem with excess constant bile.

Thanks Mike. Doctor thinks maybe a stone is blocking something now. Might do another ultrasound and asked if I want to talk to their surgeons

Well it they gave you morphine you must be in a lot of pain.
Not wonderful for the colon puts it to sleep, as will the anesthetic if you need surgery.
Actually in one attack did not get relief until I vomited must have jarred something loose or contracted
the gall bladder. Thought was having a heart attack pain was that bad.
The pain level caused the vomiting.
When the wife had her attack she thought the pain was as good or better than delivery.
Hang in there.
I feel your pain.

Its a little funny, that I remember most details of the episode 17 years later.

The chest pain thing, that is the exact thing my friend experienced before she had her gallbladder out. Seriously, she described it just the way you are. She hadn't been using morphine, so I would say it's the gallbladder. She had originally gone to the ER thinking she was having a heart attack.
