Hi,
I've read through lots of posts and learned lots of good info.
I'm the mom of a 16 yo girl who was diagnosed after her first flare just over a year ago. She just came out of a second flare, this past November, having to use a high dose of Prednisone. She was a very sick girl, on the verge of being hospitalized and lost quite a bit of weight. Lost 30 pounds after her first flare too.
She has been trying to eat very healthily, completely cut all junk food out and eating more fruits and veggies. She's active in sports and trying to stay healthy since her last flare prevented her from playing soccer at school.
She's only been on Azathioprine for just over 2 months. She's been having some mucus, some brownish and some white. She does get a small amount of blood on the TP after a hard stool but the doctor said she has some cuts and that's where that blood is coming from. Last labs were all perfect.
Anyway, as soon as something changes I become a worrying wreck hoping she's not headed for another flare.
Her GI wants to check her stools for blood as well as the mucus and possibly start her on stool softeners since she seems to be a bit constipated. No abd pain or diarrhea and she's been feeling good otherwise.
My question, is it common to be constipated (she does have a long history of constipation) with UC? The nurse didn't seem overly concerned. Also, have most people that have taken Azathioprine noticed it takes a good 3 months for the med to really effective?
Thanks in advance!!
