So... Had a follow up with the gastro this morning after being prescribed rowasa for my bleeding and proctitis. Just to introduce myself im a 24 year old girl who's been having a flare up since November. Have UC and proctitis, take apriso 4 in the morning. Im going to be honest, I haven't tried the enema yet because I work a grueling retail job and don't get home until 11 most nights. I know, excuses. anyway, he perscribed me uceris along with the apriso I take to take instead of the enema. Im wondering if anyone has taken uceris and their experience? I understand its supposed to work but lately I have been SO beaten down and sick of this disease. Im extremely bloated for almost three months straight and bleeding every day. And very anemic in result and I've finally gotten the okay to take iron.

Im just at a loss. I don't know what foods to eat, I would love to exercise but never have the energy and im just tired all the time. really would love some feedback on anything :( thanks guys.

I don't understand what your schedule has to do with not taking the enema. I know it's not fun but do it before you go to bed every night and see how you feel after a few days.

Did your doc give you uceris as a pill or an enema? It's a steroid, although it probably won't have the same systemic side effects as oral prednisone. I'd rather you try the mesalamine enema before you go to a steroid.

be careful with oral iron - it can cause gi distress and/or nausea. if IV iron is possible, that may get you more energy more quickly

uceris targets colon more than pred (which targets whole body). but it may not provide as much relief as pred. with either, you only take for a short time.

Uceris also can cause the same side effects as Pred, if you happen to be one of us who is extra sensitive to it. Take your calcium/vitamin D supplements, have your regular bone density studies and be alert for any visual problems or new joint aches and pains.

I took it for a long time, no side affects. Hydrocortisone give me puffy face and a rash though. ;-(

Enemas take a couple minutes to administer, no excuses. Fatigue is a common symptom of uc when you're flaring but it gets better as you heal.

Generally, while your uc is flaring, avoiding alcohol, caffeine, high fiber, and spicey foods is advised. You want to eat lots of bland foods.

If your symptoms are only mild and you want to use diet modification to improve you uc symptoms then it's different. Food-diet varies person-to-person, you'll have to experiment, keep a food diary and find your trouble foods. Some have trouble with dairy or gluten. I never found any food to bother my uc, I eat normally.

If you're having urgency issues, Imodium works great.

He gave me uceris as a pill after hearing I did not try the enema. However, im going to give it a try tonight because you are right there are no excuses. It's just easy for me to put off but I'm not feeling any better. Im going to try it for a few days because everyone seems to have luck with it. Thank you

I had a really good experience with Uceris the first two times I took it. It made a big difference within a week and no side effects.

As for the enemas, if your schedule is a problem you could consider using them during the day. I know it is not advisable, but I use them during the day as I suffer my worst urgency symptoms between 9pm - 9am. I can actually retain it longer during the day and get more relief from them that way which is what we are all looking for.

The need for a special diet is debatable and there are lots of ideas here on the boards. If it were me, I would first keep a food diary to try to identify any problem substances.

Don't worry about exercise until you get to feeling better and get your iron back to normal Remember, though that light exercise can be found in many daily activities. Just add a little "spring" to your step as you walk from your car to the store and then curl your shopping bags on your way back to the car. Its silly but there are lots of ways to get exercise without actually doing what we normally call "exercise".

This may sound stupid but, what is prednisone?

another thing I forgot to add - since my colonoscopy about one month ago, a week after my flare was of course still active, but I've been extremely bloated ever since - to the point where I can barely close my jeans or wear certain pants. Anyone else have this issue? I had a problem with bloating when I was first diagnosed, but now it seems to be worse. No pain or anything thankfully, just feels like a basketball and it's very uncomfortable. Don't know if it's because I can't pass gas or what. But I go to sleep very bloated and wake up just the same. Any advice or possible relief? Apriso doesn't help with that
