Question about rectal meds and enemas

I can't keep rectal meds in. Any liquid enema (mesalamine or fecal transplant) gives me an extreme urge to go, right away. It is *so* difficult to hold it in. I can hold it in, but it's really terrible.

So I got mesalamine suppositories. They don't stay in more than 1 or 2 hours because I have diarrhea. I don't know how long it takes a suppository to dissolve and do some good, but I was thinking 1 to 2 hours isn't long enough.

My rectum is really inflamed. I can feel it, and it burns, and I'm now up to 12 to 15 per day. I'm back on prednisone, having tapered recently. 15mg per day.

I'm reading lots of people who emphasize rectal meds. But I don't see what people do if it's so hard to keep it in.

Question: How can I get any type of enema to stay in there?

2 hours of supp is better than none. you could always take supp more than once a day. hopefully after some time you could retain enema longer.

you could also ask about cortifoam - may be easier to retain

Enemas are difficult to fully retain for long when you're badly inflamed. The good news is not all of it is expelled, and even short times of holding it, an hour or two, heal you. Make sure their is no air left in the bottle before administering. Try administering half a bottle at-a-time. Administer after you empty yourself (poop) and ideally right before bed. Lay on your left side when you sleep.
