What's the fastest you have flared/healed?

Early last June, things went from some bleeding and urgency to 100% bloody D and terrible pain in about 2 days. Colonoscopy at the time showed patchy, severe inflammation. Then, at a follow up colonoscopy on July 31st, everything was healed. This was after IV steroids and oral pred+Lialda.

My new doc's fellow mentioned that flaring and healing this fast is relatively rare. What are your experiences in regards to speed of flare and healing?

Makes me nervous that another flare could come quickly and knock me on my butt again. Pun intended. :-)

That's pretty fast onset to go from hardly anything to severe in two days. But I would say I usually decline over the course of 10 days which isn't much different.

My last layer, I finally figured out what to do and I recovered, from starting to get sick to being in 95% remission, in eight weeks. I thought that was pretty fast. What was also important was that during that eight weeks I functioned at about 80% of normal. That was more important to me taen the time it took to recover.

Have you ever done hydrocortisone enemas? You should look into keeping some at home so that if a flare begins, you can start them right away. If I have two or three "off" days where I'm not comfortable with what's in the toilet, I use a hydrocortisone enema for one or two nights and I get back on track. My goal now is to catch any flares in the bud. I know that's not going to work 100% of the time but starting to treat a flare early is key.

Thanks kiptyn! I wonder if I healed quickly last time because it was caught and treated pretty quickly. I literally got very sick and was immediately in the hospital...who knows. I seem to be a freak with this stuff so it would make sense if the rare stuff happened to me. I was also in the small percentage of people who a) lose weight on pred and b) lose hair on Lialda.

I have not done the enemas. I was recently prescribed anucort suppositories though which are to replace Canasa for me (Canasa didn't work very well).

Every flare is different, some are very mild while others are flares from hell lol.

Kiptyn, Eight weeks is pretty fast.....I had one of those going so i thought, 7-8 weeks of flare then no bleeding, symptoms started to subside...looked like i was headed into remission but i was simmering..could tell i wasn't out of the woods yet and then i went back down the tubes. now trying to get back into remission. Changed meds, went on pred, etc..

Jazzgirl, it was fast. I think it was because I used the enemas, started at a very high dose of Prednisone, doubled my curcumin, and...was lucky.

It helps that my UC is fairly mild compared to others on this board. The one time I was horribly sick and hospitalized was probably because I ignored the flare for 6 weeks. I would've done much better if I'd addressed it right away. But before that, my flares had always subsided on their own.

Now I know that waiting only makes it worse. My philosophy is to use enemas anytime I feel a change and, if I really start to flare, take everything I can right away.

I definitely agree that early treatment is key to a quick recovery. At least, that's what my experience tells me!
