This is awkward even asking but is a foul smell typical of a flare. I've never had a flare consisting of diareah before. The smell of gas is over powering and I'm reminded whenever I can't hold it in around anyone. It's so embarrassing. It's even worst when I go to the toilet. It's a sickly sour smell like when a child has gastro.

Sick guts produce sick smells! I just got over a flare and everyday I'm surprised with how relatively little offensive odor comes from a healthy colon. When I start getting bad smelling gas I know it is time to pop a Canasa because it means inflammation is getting started.

I've been experimenting with essential oils for use in homemade room spray. I make up batches and put them in travel size sprayers and put them around the house and in the car etc for emergency use to cover my "scent trail".

If your gas and or Ds are of explosive quality and or your Ds are yellowish I would get tested for c. Diff

Thanks they are yellow and explosive but no C. Diff. Is C.diff hard to detect?

a simple stool test will confirm C-Diff. It's a nasty infection. I have horrible smelling gas but I'm negative for C-Diff. Sometimes it's the nature of the beast. Are you on Probiotics?

You might want to try some Poo-pourri. You can order it on amazon, and you spray it in the toilet before you go. It really does help! I visited friends in NYC a few weeks ago and was terrified about sharing a bathroom in a very small apartment. Also, I was alarmed to find they didn't have a fan! They did have poo-pourri and it was awesome. Good luck!!!

From mayoclinic website "Enzyme immunoassay. Most labs use the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) test, which is faster than other tests, but isn't sensitive enough to detect many infections and has a higher rate of falsely normal tests.
Polymerase chain reaction. This sensitive molecular test can rapidly detect the C. difficile toxin B gene in a stool sample and is highly accurate. It's now being adapted by several laboratories and becoming more widely available.
Cell cytotoxicity assay. A cytotoxicity test looks for the effects of the C. difficile toxin on human cells grown in a culture. This type of test is sensitive, but it is less widely available, more cumbersome to do and requires more than 24 to 48 hours for test results. Some hospitals use both the EIA test and cell cytotoxicity assay to ensure accurate results."

It maybe can be something that you ate?
Did they test you for ova and parasites and other bacterial infections? Have you traveled?

Thanks everyone. Yes I've had DNA stool tests and c.diff. I get no pain except when passing gas. It's very bad. Once the gas has passed the pain stops. I might only go once a day but it's revolting smelling, yellow diareah. The gas pain is worst than the diareah

Feel for you. As I said on another post, my stool samples came up clear but the ulceration looked like c diff according to the gastro who did my flexi sig and a week of flagyl cleared it so I am sure it was some strain of infection. The second time it happened I was already mildly in flare and the flagyl didn't help but then I had an instant success from steroids. I was told that deterioration on steroids often means infection.

If I was you I'd be tempted to try a course of Flagyl but it can have long term adverse affects or make things worse so it is very much an individual choice. The other antibiotic that was amazing for me when I had post infectious IBS was erythromicin which I had been prescribed for laryngitis. Again though, antibiotics can make us worse too so there is a risk in trying them.

If it's not infection they say that excess fat in the stool can cause yellow, foul smelling stools which could mean something in the biliary system not working well (or celiac disease) - hopefully your GI can get this checked out properly.

I've very rarely have foul smelling stools, as in, I don't clear a room out for the most part, though on occasion during my menstrual cycle it can smell pretty bad but not every time which also eludes me especially since I have the lactose intolerance and IBS as well as Crohn's but my husband can kill with his smell lol. My farts never stink either, if anything my burps are more likely to have a smell than my farts do and I don't know why, but it's not often that my burps are smelly either. Not complaining of course but I do find it curious that a person with 3 separate bowel issues wouldn't have the worst of the worst smells coming out of them via stools or farts...I get horrible smelling breath but I think that's linked to tonsil stones cuz those little suckers wreak just like bad smelling bowel movements/farts maybe that's where all my stink is stored lol! Though I hate it and have no idea how to get rid of the bad breath once and for all, it's not often I sneeze or cough or clear my throat and pop one of those tonsil stones out, can't even see where exactly they are inside my throat like others can. I'd rather have smelly fats and BM's than breath.

I don't tolerate flagyl very well. I get aching joints and sweat.. Not sure if that's something everyone gets or just me. The smell is very breathtaking. I used to wonder why my farts didn't smell, now I'm wishing they didn't. I just want it to stop

In my experience "simmering" with UC comes with almost no odour, whether gas or stool. However when a flare is about to become severe, I get advance warning by way of a smell change. When I am flaring severely, the smell is as you describe.

I go maybe twice a day. There isn't a lot of blood but it's there. Pain is with Gas and followed by a bowel movement, otherwise no pain at all. I'm still gaining weight, haven't lost my appetite. I don't feel nauseaous. Once I didn't have a bowel movement at all, but when I do its diareah and revolting.

Just when I thought my husband wasn't very understanding of my UC. My Daughter had friends over tonight. As hard as I tried I couldn't hold in my gas. I hoped the smell would be gone before they came into the room but it wasn't.. It lingers for ages. They ran around holding their nose blaming each other. I retreated to the garage to let them decide who was the owner of the smell. They came into the garage asking who farted. My husband (knowing it was me) owned it.. He said "don't you fart"? They said "yeah but we don't smell like that"..

LOL Petah that's funny!!! You should get a dog then whenever you have to fart just be in the same room with the dog and blame him lol!

I have always thought the horrible smell is probably dead cells decaying, sloughing off from the ulceration. Not normal digestive gas. Just a guess.

I've never had ulcers as far as I'm aware. Just inflammation
