How easy is it to catch c diff second hand? A lady at work just told me her grandson has c diff. She visits this grandson in hospital and at home and likely shares bathroom with him...then comes to work and shares a bathroom with me. Her entire family thinks c diff is "no big deal" seriously!?!?! Anyway, I don't think she has c diff... But I've heard that people can be carriers. How high is my risk of getting c diff second hand like this? I'm feeling paranoid, but I feel like it'd be my luck to catch it. Clearly I'm washing my hands constantly and try to touch as little as possible, but really, I'm feeaking out.

i think if it were that easy to catch c diff, the entire world would have it by now.
as always, washing your hands is the best thing to do and taking your probiotics daily.
i've been worried about
this too since my sister is pregnant and babies are born with a high concentration of c diff. i told her that she can't expect me to watch her kid and i don't plan on going to the hospital when it's born. i sound like the worst sister ever, but i've had it 4x and do not want it again.

Lol. Hopefully your sister understands.
I get that "normal" people don't catch c diff so easily, but, I also know that U.S. Crappy poopers are at much higher risk of getting it. Just wondering HOW much higher risk are we?

From what I understand it can get on clothes and be transferred around. The general population is at a low risk because their microbiome has enough good guys to keep it in check. Those with health conditions and other risk factors should be more cautious.

Same as what Gary said...
Also there has been a lot of papers on C-diff in our food supply. Like cold meats and such. Much like bacteria I think it sorta boils down to luck... some people just get unlucky and catch the really bad strains. Like in hospitals, the really bad ones get passed around and the people that get hit are those that their immune system is suppressed for one reason or another.

Just one paper but there are lot's of others on C-Diff in the food supply issue.

A lot of people have c diff but it only becomes a problem when the c diff starts multiplying too quickly. Oftentimes people get it in the hospital because of antibiotics they took that caused the good microbiota to be killed out and the c diff ( which is an opportunistic pathogen) starts multiplying and causes an infection
