Thanks OM. Just seen this.
I have similar snps to SLML it would seem and from my reading I had seen that hydroxy B-12 would probably be the one for me. I read in the report I got from nutrahacker that methyls are not recommended when you have the VDR mutations, which I have (although hetero at least and not homoz) but didn't get around to reading the research behind it.
I am however very anti-supplements after my bad experiences with them.
I've decided not to supplement any folate after my bad experience and I just make sure I eat some high folate food every day which I think is probably enough because I've known for years that if I don't keep up the greens I get itchy gums which I presume is a sign of deficiency and I've had no itchy gums since being strict on the folate foods. Us UC people don't have it easy with digesting greens and beans of course. Even boiling greens in water and using the water as soup base is better than nothing I think.
B-12 I'm not so sure about
what to do, may try some hydroxy at some point but would not want to get low in B2 from doing that as you know I am sure low B2 is very bad for the mucous membranes.
I've been trying to understand from doing a lot of reading why the folate enzyme got tuned so low, I am wondering if it is something to do with having predecessors who would have ingested a lot of betaine as, from what I have read, betaine is also a methyl donor. I think my diet has been low in it so am looking at trying to up it. Interestingly, betaine is high in wheat which every nutritionist these days seems to be turning into the enemy.
One supplement I've been thinking of trying is ALA having read your induction theory thread. I'd also long been of the opinion that I am probably low in glutathione and I believe it is a precursor.
While we are on the subject of the genetics, a couple of other things that have come up for me out of the 23andme stuff that seem interesting, and would be relevant for others with the SNPs are my reduced capacity to convert beta carotene to vit A - (predecessors eating too much liver?) which is another important vitamin for the mucous membranes. Net chatter doesn't much mention this BCM01 mutation as it is outside the methylation cycle but it seems important. I think it is very interesting that many are claiming better health when they add organ meats back into the diet, something our predecessors would have eaten in most cultures.
phys.org/news/2009-11-genetic-link-vitamin-deficiency.htmlThe other confusing but probably important thing with regards to inflammation is the work done on why vitamin E seems to be anti-inflammatory for some and not for others. I appear to have several snps that suggest that α-tocopherol would be inflammatory for me - discussion here on another forum
forums.phoenixrising.me/index.php?threads/genotypes-snps-to-help-determine-vitamin-e-supplementation-relation-to-inflammatory-cytokines.19377/ which has left me totally confused as to if I should eat olive oil or not!
