OT: During a colonoscopy, doctors trash sedated patient

This makes me so sad :( Glad he got some compensation

That is terrible...how unprofessional. This stuff makes me totally angry!

Wow. That is really horrible.

Wow, how cruel! Patients are usually scared or anxious about the scope and result in the first place, so make light of it and trash talk a patient while they can't defend themselves is heartless and despicable.

Somehow this doesn't sound right to me. How could he not know that he was recording the whole thing? While the thing as a whole was disgusting, and he won the court case, the case does seem to have been blown up a little out of proportion. The story or the victim could have told the truth in that he wanted to record what happened during the whole procedure instead of some lame excuse that he was just trying to record doctor instructions after the colonoscopy. Heck, he could have just recorded those instructions after the procedure and, every place I know of, gives you written instructions afterwards. Where on earth was the smartphone? Why was he purposely hiding it so that he could record instructions AFTER the procedure? On top of that, from what I have heard of the audio, they suspected he had hemorrhoids but it was apparently too dark to be conclusive so she wrote down hemorrhoids anyway. That's a little different than just purposely falsifying something out of some kind of meanness. I'm not saying that nobody was faultless here but we aren't getting the whole truth from the victim or his story telling side either. They should have been upfront and honest that he went into this to purposely record what happened during the whole procedure.

I'm sure this is a very rare and that patient's respect is mostly the norm while there a sleep or sedated.

I, also, as Gary did, find the patient story a little weird.

This is unfortunate, but let's be honest, we all do this all the time about people we don't know or know won't find out. Since the guy is knocked out, that may as well be the same thing. I wouldn't so much call him a victim but a lucky SOB because he just got $500,000 for something that all of us are guilty of and do on a daily basis.

The world we live in...sad.

They are a disgrace!! I'm glad he left his phone on, whether by accident or design!! Maybe he sensed something was "off" with these people, who knows, but it will make these "so called professionals" more careful in future.

I thought about what Gary asked - why did the patient start recording before the procedure? I think I know why.

When I get a colonoscopy, they have me put all of my belongings in a plastic bag which goes underneath the gurney. When I wake up in the recovery area, I'm not allowed to (and don't feel like I should) walk around until I'm really out of the anesthesia. I'm mentally alert, but my body is woozy and I'm focusing on trying to pass gas. That's when the doctor comes to talk to me. So, if I wanted to record what the doctor was saying, I wouldn't be able to reach under my gurney and pull out my cell phone without falling out of bed.

So I have no problem with what the patient did.

Those doctors disgust me. No one wants to have a colonoscopy, it's embarrassing and unpleasant. Medical professionals should provide the patient with as much dignity as possible. I have no problem with a little banter but when it becomes extremely cruel towards the patient who has a rash, another medical condition, it's outrageous. And the questionable diagnosis of the hemorrhoids really pushes me over the edge. The doctors could've put "hemorrhoids suspected, but couldn't see clearly during the exam," and that would've been 100% true.

Maybe the medical professionals doing the scope should quietly think about how much money they're making for a 10 minute procedure.

I'm going to put the doctors' names in this post so that when someone does a Google search on those doctors, this post could possibly come up.

Whether he lied or not isn't the issue, looking at the bigger picture the whole recording was disgusting and shameful and I think more people should "intentionally" start recording their C-scopes to find out what's going on and how they are really being viewed by ******s that are suppose to care about their patients not mock and belittle them...people make me sick!

Those are the people that deserve to know what living with IBD is like.

Agreed Poppie, I mean really, who gives a crap about whether the patient did lie about why the whole C-scope converstation got taped honestly that's got nothing to do with the lack of respect he received by so called professionals and that's what the focus should be on, not picking apart whether he lied about how the whole conversation got recorded because it doesn't changed the fact that people are disgusting with how they treat others.

I'd like to believe that the majority rather than less specialists don't behave this way with their patients but sadly humanity is horrible so I wish you luck with your scope, maybe you should consider taping your C-scope, I might do that myself, I though about it before but wasn't sure if I should or not...definitely something to consider.
