5ASA rectal meds---please help!

I have had negative reactions in the past to ORAL 5ASA (Asacol, Colozal, Lialda and Asacol HD)  Either they just did not work, they gave me flu like symptoms or with Lialda, my UC symptoms became worse 10 fold!   Since I responded so poorly to those drugs in the past, is it safe to say that I should NOT attempt rectal 5ASA meds?    I currently have more proctitis than UC right now and am looking for alternatives in the rectal med arena that are not steroids!    Let me know your thoughts!

My doctor took me off Asacol (same reason) and asked me to stop all 5ASA rectal meds too.

But that sound like a question for your GI. It seems every GI has a different "plan" based on your individual symptoms.

I wouldn't fear the rectal steroids either if your GI suggests it. They don't have nearly as much side effects as pred in pill form.

Yes, avoid all forms of meslamine (oral, enema, and suppository) if you have a known meslamine allergy, and it sounds like you do. If your symptoms get dramatically worse after taking meslamine then it's an allergic issue.

the Lialda experience sounds pretty bad, but you also report taking other 5-asa oral and not noticing any difference. that is not a conclusive case for intolerance.

We never asked you the dosage of the orals you used....so that is a point to consider. Many docs start at the highest, which my GI never did. He went up from low dosage.

You could start with a low dosage of Rowasa such as 2g, or better yet...with Pentasa 1g RETEBTION ENEMA.
Don't bother with the supps in my opinion.

Have you tried Theracurmin (Curcumin) with a bit of black pepper to help absorption? I have found that it's the best herbal supplement for curtailing inflammation and that it works even better than 5ASA's. I also eat non-GMO as much as possible and take VSL3 probiotics.

GIs should really be prescribing rectal 5ASA's instead of oral 5ASA's for inflammation that starts at the rectum.
